i have a manfrotto 055clb and a 486rc2 head, however, i also need a pan head that will support my 1Dmk11 and a 50-500 sigma and allow smooth panning for motorsport and wildlife etc, any suggestions ? i'd like a geared jobbie but funds won't allow it :( i have been on the manfrotto site and read all the info but nothing beats advice of people who actually use the products

Manfrotto 393 for me best £100 've spent in photography:thumbs:

Have you tried one? It works fine for me and I see lots of other togs using them  Holds my 1dmk111 and 500mm rock steady and allows me to pan and tilt when and where necessary along with the added benefit of not having to constantly adjust knobs etc

The 393 is a heavy lens support for a monopod. Can't see how that would help with panning on a tripod.

Just going on the description on the web. The 804RC2 does the same job but for half the price.

Theyre completely different with yours you would have to loosen the adjustment knobs to achieve pan tilt wheras with the 393 it's got a friction head so the knobs only need adjusting once to your prefferred setting / feel then they hold the lens in the required position without any further adjustment, it is completely possible to leave my combo on the tripod without holding the camera, wheras with yours you would need to retighten the knobs

But can you achieve panning without accidentally adjusting the tilt? With the 804 you leave the tilt knobs tightened and just have the pan one loose. I would imaging the 393 would be similar to a ball head it that respect and it that case the 488RC2 would do a similar job, also for less money.

Thats possible but as he says he wants Wildlife / motorsport then IMHO you'd need flexibility on both pan and tilt, thats why I recommend the 393

Fair enough although for any sport I would probably recommend a monopod and ballhead rather than a tripod anyway. ;)

I've just been looking into heads as I bought a monopod recently.

I was trying to find one that would go with the monopod as well as work on the ergorest that I bought for a safari.

I think a ball type would be ideal

The ergo rest may end up just supporting the beanbag, we shall see how we get on.
