So I'm pretty certain I will be buying the Manfrotto MT055CXPRO3 tripod, but I'm having trouble deciding which head to go with it.

It will be used primarily for landscapes, and I'm looking for recommendations for the best head. I think I will be going for a 3 way pan & tilt, and am drawn to the Benro HD3 for its lightweight and load capacity, before I take the plunge I thought I'd seek any advice of what others may use with this tripod?

If you're shooting landscapes, then do consider a geared head - I have the Manfrotto 410 Junior (on a 055CXPro3), and it's excellent.

It works much like a normal 3 way head, in that you set each of the 3 axis separately, but rather than twist / loosen a handle to move then tighten, you first turn and hold the larger dial to free rotate, then release that to quickly lock, then fine tune position with the smaller geared dial - very precise and easy to use. Perfect for landscapes where you realise you want a small adjustment after initial line up, as the geared adjustment has no 'play' in it, so you don't have the irritating 'loosen, adjust, tighten..grr, loosen, adjust, tighten...grr...'sequences that you can get with a normal 3 way head.

Only downside is cost and weight, but they do pop up now and then on the classifieds, etc.

Just a word about the 055 XPRO 3, I bought one 6 months ago and it fell to bits a couple of weeks ago, it hasn't had a lot of use. OTOH I have a cheapy lightweight chinese job that has stood up to all sorts of abuse over several years and is still going strong.

Manfrotto 410 gets my vote.

Thanks for your replies. I will certainly look into the 410 and 480 heads.

Chris, having read many reviews on this, are you sure you couldn't get it repaired/replaced as a faulty unit?

I have a number of heads including ball & sockets and 3 ways. I swop them depending on what work I am doing.
Sorry I have no idea what the numbers are

Thanks for all your replies, Tripod now ordered, and 410 head purchased on the classifieds. :)

Excellent, keep us informed ;)

You can't go wrong with the 410 head! I'll never sell mine!
