Hi all,

There are a fair few tog mags available out there, I was wondering what people read and which ones people rate best?

Rob

I read Practical Photography mostly, for me it has the right mix of information on how to take a photo and how to edit it. Plus it's currently running the DSLR skills course.

I'm not a fan of mags that seem to lay importance on quite heavy photoshop editing.

I also read National Geographic occasionally, although not stictly a tog magazine, the photo's can be astounding at times

I look and see what is in the mags each month.

If there is an article that interests me I buy it.

Ditto.

I seem to buy mags like Professional Photographer more nowadays, unless there's an article that interests in me in others.

The only mag I buy regularly is Outdoor Photography

Same as above. I just buy them if there is something I specifically want to read about. I was reading a few months old PP the other day and I could swear I'd read almost the same article back in the days I was using a film slr.

I subscribe to Digital Photo as i find it has good easy to follow tutorials for the not very experianced amongst us. I dare say when my ability has improved i may switch to a more "grown up" magazine.

Black & White Photography nearly every month. It slipped a bit earlier in the year but has had some strong issues recently.

I pick up Digital SLR Photography every so often but it does seem in thrawl to Photoshop a bit too much - and doesn't really allow much criticism of that point of view. Plus - and it shouldn't make a difference but it does show a certain attitude - all the writers with photos in the front are all white, middle-aged blokes and whilst I'm a white, middle-aged bloke some variety is good.

And my newsagent thinks I read Amateur Photographer every week so I have to avoid going in there on a Tuesday if I actually don't want a copy forced on me.

As others I often browse the stand in Smiths and see what takes my fancy.

Professional photographer seems to be a favourite looking at the purchases over the last 12 months - probably because it covers some of the business side too which interests me.

I used to be a subscriber to Practical Photography a few years ago, but over time I just saw the same subjects re-visited so I cancelled my subscription. I still think it's the best alrounder though, I tried the other more photoshoppy biased ones but preferred PP in the end. I buy a copy every now and then if the cover interests me.

Currently I subscribe to Digital Photo and Practical Photography. I am soon to be cancelling the Digital Photo subs though as I find it is becoming repetetive and I will probably not renew my Practical Photography subs either as I only subscribed as there was a good offer on a Mini-Trekker + Subscription. I think DSLR User and Photography Monthly are also good reads but more and more I am reading Pro tog mags which I find much more informative.

Interesting, cheers peeps.

I was wondering if getting a sub to a mag would be worth it, but I think i'll be better seeing what articles take my fancy each month.

I a good deal comes up on a sub with kit I may change my mind.

I subscribe to Amateur Photographer and enjoy reading it cover to cover most weeks. There's the odd technical article that I'm not keen on but all in all, it's varied and entertaining. I especially like the profiles they do on photographers and the Magnum special was sheer class.

I tend to look at them in WHSmiths (is this the new Library?:D) if anything is interesting then I will buy.

But I do subscribe to AG and Silvershotz. Both fine art and concentrate on the pictures, they not do reviews

I have got a few Practical Photographer ones, I only get them when there is a cd on processing with them that I like the look of so I can try to get some ideas to try!

I've been getting digital photo recently, mainly for the photoshop tutorials they have been running for newbies like me. I do find that most mags are half filled with adverts.

Digital Photo does annoy me in this sense, it is 138 pages long but 57 full pages are adverts (yes I just counted) and another 12 are made up of fillers i.e a photo of a monitor used at the start of a review section spread over 2 pages) so in fact what I thought was a 138 page mag is actualy a 69 page mag.

Maybe i'm just fussy??

Me too. Many seem a lot of money for the content which is ready available for free on the net, so only buy if there is something I really want to read up on or for a long journey.

I did buy Practical Photography a fair bit when I first started out which helped me with the basics.

Yup, I buy National G from time to time simply for the photos as they are sometimes breathtaking and inspiring.

When I first got (heavily) into photography I bought a few magazines but as soon as I was brought up to speed on makes and models and available lenses I lost interest in them as they were more about filling space than writing something worthwhile. The focus is like 30% dslr, 40-50% point and shoot and the rest is somewhere in gizmos/gadgets/lenses/photoshop/userphotos. And be sure to sprinkle a lot of adverts here and there!

I find it's just not worth it. And they're expensive for what they offer. If anything, I'm browsing Flickr more often and perusing the web and forums for tutorials and advice.

But they are a time killer when you're on the train or doing something incredibly boring.

Amateur Photography and EOS Magazine. All pretty cool I think, get some dead handy tips on them. Spesh from the latest EOS Mag, about a Female Gig Photographer who made it big with a 400d! Epic.

Yes - the EOS magazine is a good read - worth the subscription. May only be quarterly but adverts can be counted on one hand and its all very informative. For £ 20 for 5 issues (roughly) is about the same as an ordinary mag anyway.

Buy? :nono: I read Amatuer Photographer and the British Journal of Photography + whatever others I can carry up the stairs at Borders to the instore Starbucks:lol:

I've never been terrribly impressed with most of the mags. I did see professional photographer (?) or a similar title last week while waiting at the dentists. Seemed better than most.

On the whole I think the mags are like a lot of hobby mags - they target beginners so you get the same intro stuff coming up every year. I might look at one if I was thinking of buying something, but then again I'm not that impressed with a lot of the reviews.

Don't buy just a quick flick through in newsagents, then TP :woot:, and a few other tog websites, mainly newspapers to compare my shots to theirs

Superb!

We have nowhere I can do that. Unless I smuggle them past the checkouts to the starbucks in the local Sainsburys but i am fairly certain thats theft not borrowing!!!

I subscribe to JPG Magazine (www.jpgmag.com). It's only available in the US unless you have a subscription or buy it through lomography.com. It's the only photography magazine that I have ever read that isn't about a million pounds worth of equipment and photoshopping the hell out of everything. It's all about the photographs, which is nice.

:)

ive bought a couple of photo mags but none specifically, agreeing with most if theres a good artical then i would buy it. i never really buy mags now as i never learnt anything from them, i mainly learn from lurking forums and searching the internet and at college. i dont like how most magazines except profesional photographer and like magazines are very much aimed at heavey post processing.

i find they encourage people with little or no skill/talent to go out and take rubbish photos and do abit of HDR/heavey PP so it looks semi decent to them (personally makes me want to puke!) and then later publish them in the magazines.
people are welcome to disagree with me on that!

the only good magazines seem to be the more specialist ones

Totally agree with you

Practical Photography for me (cheap with Tesco clubcard points) plus we've got a local market stall which sells previous months mags for £1 each or 3 for £2.50 which is great for picking up the odd photo mag.

As im' studying photography full time i subscribe to BJP (British journal of photography). Absolutely superb and not full of the same adverts etc....
