Yes
Somehow over the last couple of months I seem to have ended up with a 17-40 f4 L and a 17-35 f2.8 L.

Can't say I really need both with them being so similar!

Really can't decide which to sell!

Opinions?

Selling to buy a new pup!

Cheers

Rob

Well the 17-40mm is a very good lens, I had one for a while.

Which is sharper and offers superior image quality at F4? 5mm from 35-40mm is nothing so unless the 17-35 does not outperform the 17-40mm at F4 I would keep the 17-35mm

Good point Richard!

I've not compared if I'm honest! I rarely use this focal length!

Will have to have a go later and see the difference.

Out of interest, what would you keep the 17-35? Purely because it's faster?

Rob

both excellent lenses I personally would keep the 17-35 f2.8 if it is a sharp copy wide open at f2.8, if it is not (as quite a few are not) then I would keep the 17-40 f4 because that certainly IS sharp wide open

Yes, speed would be the main reason.

That said - one thought to consider. Is the 17-35mm weather sealed?

If not then consider that too - the 17-40mm with your 1D II (and a filter) is fully weather sealed should you feel the need to shoot in inclement conditions...

Any reason why David?

Rob

its 2.8 :p which gives me more accurate focussing (ey for having a 5d:p) greater control of depth of field and better performance in low light.

I don't care about weathersealing because my body isn't sealed and I have no intentions to get a 1 series

assuming IQ is the same over the two (which I don't actually know)

Got ya! Thanks for taking the time to respond David, always good to understand others thought processes.

Thanks

Rob

Have you done tests now? Which is sharper at the key apertures? Is 2.8 sharp enough? What are the extreme corners like? How bad is the distortion of each at 17mm?

I haven't done the tests as yet...I have put both up for sale at present as this pup cost a little more than expected!

Cheers

Rob

Whats the build quality of the 2.8 like? I've read a few sources that say it's worse off than the f/4.
