I want to replace my sigma 70-300mm as I bought this when I first got my kit and am now looking for better IQ. I have a canon 450d, Sigma 10-20mm, 17-55mm so I am looking in the range of 60-400mm. I am quite happy to buy second hand would love the canon 100-400mm but it is still too much used thanks.

see if you can pick up an L telephoto that's in rough nick? I've got a 70-200 2.8 that has chipped paint but works like a dream (was a bit over 500 though). You should get a warranty on the gear anyway if you're buying from a used dealer online.

70-200 f/4L and 1.4x tc?

This is an option I have not considerd is this lens ok without IS? not sure I could get both for £500 though.

The 70-200 F4 L is fine without IS. It will only start to struggle in low light conditions at th far end of the zoom or on windy days (as I found out on fridays just past)

Otherwise its a fantastic lens

The Sigma 300mm f4 HSM + a teleconverter is a very good choice. I have one that I was considering selling so if interested you can create a wanted thread and I will post in it.

On the other hand the Sigma is not a zoom lens so if you do not want a prime then the Canon 70-200 f4 + TC is a great choice and you can get a used set for around £500 if you settle for the Canon MK1 1.4xTC or the Sigma 1.4x TC.
