I have a Nikon 70-300mm AF-S VR f4.5-5.6G IF-ED lens and I was wondering whether anyone can recommend a suitable teleconverter to use with it.

Don't bother with that lens.

You can fit a Kenko 1.4x Pro 300 DG but the results are not good.
 
no teleconvertor will retain the AF on this lens IIRC and will reduce you aperture significantly
 
The Kenko will, albeit with jitters just before the AF lock.
 
Sigma one fits and works but does as Andy says, tried and tested last year

Looks like I may have to talk myself into a longer lens then:D

Is there a particular reason the TCs aren't any good with this lens.......is it the VR or is this common to all Nikon Zooms?

It's common to all zooms except very very expensive ones. TCs are basically designed to fit big primes (eg 300mm f/2.8 upwards) which are optically relatively simple. Designing a TC to cope with the huge differences in geometry you get with a zoom lens is just too difficult.
 
They work fine on zoom F2.8 lenses and some F4 lenses, 1.4 one works well on a Sigma 100-300 F4 and 120-300 F2.8

2x TC also works fine on a sigma 70-200 F2.8

Presumably then, a TC will have the same problems when used with Canon 70-300mm IS 1:4-5.6??

Not really as you cannot fit an extender to a 70-300mm IS

Not sure about the Kenko model as I have never even seen one, don't they make coffee?

I have physically tried to match a Canon extender on a 70-300 IS and it doesn't fit, but then I haven't read anywhere that that states it does. I no longer have that lens so cannot go into more detail as to why it doesn't but there are a few threads on here about the subject if you fancy doing a search.

From my understanding the Canon extender has an element that protrudes into the rear of the lens. This is fine for the L glass and some non L lenses however the consumer zooms will not alow this fitment.
The Kenko pro convertor offers nearly the same quality as the Canon and does not have the element that protrudes into the lens.

That said you still loose a stop of light and so autofocus (Unless you want to apply tape to certain contacts). Alternatively there is the cheaper Kenko which does not report it's presence to the camera and therefore allows AF to be attempted. How successful it is will depend on subject contrast.
