Which TC gives best results on a Nikor AF-s 70-200 VR. I'm looking to extend it's range without loosing all that beautiful sharpness. Ok, I know I'll loose a bit and that can't be helped but which TC will I loose least with? A 1.4? Who's got experience with these?

I regularly use a Kenko 1.4TC with my 70-200 and can't physically see any drop in IQ but that may be down to a) my eyesight and b) not being as critical as some people.

Hi Dougie,

I think the 1.4 is considered the best for maintaining speed and sharpness but I also tried the 2.0 and the 1.7.... I ended up going for the 1.7 as I needed the extra reach.

Did you go for a Nikkor or Kenko and are you happy with the results?

More to the point, could we see some samples using the TC + 70-200? :)

I went with the Nikon. When I said I tried the 1.7 and the 2.0 I was referring to the older (and cheaper) TC 20E II not the much better (by all accounts) III.

Unfortunately, I got rid of all my comparison shots when I had the opportunity to try the different types of TC back to back. :bonk:

The following picture was taken with the 1.7x plus the 70-200VR at 200mm. Hopefully someone will be along with something better as an example.

I use a Kenko Pro300 DGX 1.4x TC with my Canon 70-200 2.8 IS L and TBH you can only see the difference when pixel peeping. A full photo on my 23" HD monitor looks as good with the TC either on or off. I'm just waiting for my 5D3 to be delivered before I can give it a really good trial, but there seems hardly any difference with my 550D, 7D or 5D2.

This is a picture of a lioness I took recently using the Nikon 70-200mm VRII and the TC-20E III. EXIF is a shocking 1/80, ISO 200, f5.6, 230mm - I know! :bang: But it was a "proper" grab shot! Only a small amount of sharpening and then uploaded to Flickr. Will try and find some better examples tomorrow!

Mmm, it looks much softer on here!

Oh, I've also got a chaffinch on my Flickr, or on birds forum here, taken with the same combo (with some no so great photoshopping - I'm still a beginnger:lol:).
