Hi all I'm wanting some advise on lens choices.

I currently have a sigma 70-200 2.8 non os but recently switched from a dx body to a fx body D3.
I have been thinking about a 1.4 teleconvertor on the 70-200 or the sigma 120-300 2.8 or keeping the sigma 70-200 and buying the Nikon 300 f4.

What are people's thoughts on this setup for shooting sports, mainly football kids and adults.

Cheers kev

What's your budget? Which version of the sigma 120-300mm are you talking about? What conditions are you shooting you sports in, daylight or under floodlights?

Hi cheers for replying

My budget is no more than say £1200
The sigma is a couple of years old I think it's the os version.
Outdoor sports early morning and afternoon kick offs

The latest version of the sigma 120-300mm f2.8 DG OS HSM seems to have addressed all the issue of previous versions, and the price has come down from its initial release price, but you're still paying a premium, about £2700/2800 which is outside your budget. The previous version which you can get new, check link, but again about £1600/1800 is probably the one you should got for, if you can find a used copy, or alternatively if you find a good (used) copy of the Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM Lens, that would set you back less than a £900.

I assume why you are asking the question is due to reach with your new full frame setup. If you have good light, then a TC is a cheap and handy way of getting that extra reach, but that combination suffers if the light conditions drop off. The Nikon 300mm f4 a very good lens and takes the 1.4x and 1.7x TCs with easy, the canon f4 version was my main lens for motorsport/aviation until I updated to the f2.8 version. The sigma 120-300mm f2.8 a very good lens, thats had several updates over the years and is a good alternative to a 300mm prime lens, especially the current and previous versions, depends whether you want the flexibility of a zoom or the IQs of a prime.

Thanks for all your input Pete still confused as to what to buy.
There's a sigma 129-300 os going for £1100.
Now come up with another option!
This is I keep my 70-200 and my ex body and put the nikon 300 on my fx body.

Just a bit concerned about the weight of the sigma even though i shoot on a monopod.

Cheers kev

Depends on how comfortable you are.... Nowadays I have no issue shooting all day handheld with the 300mm f2.8 which is about same weight as the sigma. Shooting from a monopod should be a breeze. If your apprehensive about this lens, you could always hire it for a small fee.

Sorry Peter didn't the link you put up. I do wear specks though.

Good idea hiring one first but the one for sale at £1100 looks mint and knowing me I'll wait and it'll sell.
