Hello,

I am in the process of choosing a new lens for Christmas and I would really appreciate some help!

I currently have a Canon 7D and a Nifty Fifty 1.8 prime.

My uses will be:-

- Standard walkabout lens
- Landscape
- A little product photography
- Night skies / star trails
- Occasional portrait / family shots (think birthdays, xmas etc)
- Pits/garages when at the racing

I love my nifty fifty but often find myself needing a shorter focal length (the 1.6x crop factor of my 7D coming in to play)

Currently on the shortlist:-

Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 £650 new (currently my favourite)
Canon 16-35mm II f2.8 approx. £750 - £800 2nd hand
Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM £350 new (my 2nd favourite because of its cheap price, has OS and a versatile focal range)
Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens £650 new

Ive been leaning towards the Sigma 18-35 because it wont break the bank, and the 1.8 would be very handy for the indoor family shots. Im not bothered about size & weight as im used to lugging around long prime lenses.

Bearing in mind my uses above, which one would you go for and why? I would be happy to consider any other suggestions if people have them.

Thank you very much!

The sigma 17-50 it's a bargain and close to the canon 17-55 in quality. The other two are both to short for me.

Without wanting to make your life more confusing I'd suggest the original Tamron 17-50 2.8 (non-VC), available for sub £200 2nd hand and excellent image quality... Should mean you have enough money left over for another lens or an external flash maybe?
(bobby digital from overclockers by any chance?)

I would throw in the Tamron 17-50 VC, in my personal experience of a number of examples of both, that little bit sharper and definitely better build quality.

An excellent lens, probably cheaper than any on your list as well if budget matters.

Hmm the Tamron does add some confusion into the mix!

Does it really compare with the Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 ? Which from what I can tell seems to be a very well made, quality, sharp lens. Or does it really compare to the the Sigma 17-50mm 2.8 ?

I dont want to be a snob, and would be willing to go for the cheaper option, but my budget is around £600-£700 so I am after the best I can in that range really.

I am still in two minds about 35mm being ok for max focal length. I do have a 50mm prime in the bag so I thought that would cover it, but we all know that having to switch lenses can be a pain when you can just have one lens to cover it. hmmm.

Any more thoughts?
