Hi guys,

am about to push the button for a MBPr but am unsure of what size ssd to go for? I'll be using it for LR5 editing primarily (using smart previews so no huge raws will be on the main drive), and the rest of the spec is going to be 2ghz processor and 16gb memory.

Was thinking the 512 ssd would be fine but wouldn't mind advice beforehand!

(i've just also seen the previous post with a similar question but as i'll be mainly working with just smart previews and not storing large amounts of raws i still wouldn't mind advice! :)

Thanks!

You will probably get different advice from everyone that answers, but I always work on the basis that it is better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. I maxed out ram and ssd when I got mine. Obviously there are cost implications.

Whilst I can't answer your question directly I can say that I've recently changed my iMac 27" to a new one with the fusion drive, so effectively a 1TB drive with an additional 128 SSD and it flies with CS6 PS and PR. I only have my current workflow on the internal drive and once work is completed, each project is removed to a couple of 4TB externals whilst Time Machine maintains another backup of my rolling workflow on the internal drive to another external 4TB drive. This results in everything just about living on the SSD all the time.
It appears to work great for me so assuming you have a similar workflow 512 SSD should work a treat or even be rather overkill!

I recently bought the latest 2.3ghz retina and went with the 512gb ssd.
I also bought a thunderbolt 2TB drive, so all raw files go on that and leave the ssd free. I've used about 125gb on the disk so far and that includes Lightroom, photoshop, Final Cut Pro, screenflow, parallels, windows 7, advanced drummer with about 5 sound packs, simcity, and a few other random program's. Can't see the drive filling up too much more

If you can choose specs then I'd recommend going for the fastest processor and and much RAM as you can get, but not to worry about size of main drive as long as it's =>240Gb. Images can always be stored on external drives, but you can't upgrade the processor or add RAM to a Retina, and the better spec'd both of those are, the longer it will be acceptable.

Thanks for the replies!

Ended up going for 2.3ghz/16gb/512SSD, so should be plenty for my needs hopefully!
