Hey guys,
Can anybody explain to me please in simple terms what the difference is between the different speedlights?
and which ones would you recommend for my Nikon D3100?

I have a budget of £400 but don;t know what all of the terminology means (TTL... I-TTL etc) and I have no idea which one to go for
Thanks!

I'd also like a speedlight which allows me to take photo's like this?
I'm not sure what the name is (forgive me if I'm wrong), The word curtain sync seems to ring a bell?
But basically the photo's where the guys take them, and then move the camera in all kinds of directions to get the long exposure effect?

Get something like a SB-700 and you'll be sorted and save the rest of the money. That flash will give you everything you need without going to over the top.

Those photos above are basically a mixture of doing a long exposure and using flash to fill in.

Rear sync is when the flash fires at the end of the exposure ( when the rear curtain is going down) front curtain sync ( when the first curtain comes down).

Rear curtain gives a more natural look with trails coming behind the subject as the flash is fired at the end of the exposure.

Normal flash sync has the trails in front as the flash is fired first and then the exposure carries on after that.

Thankyou for the reply Matt, so the 2 pictures I posted would be front curtain sync? As the exposure lines are all infront of the DJ's?

When you say the SB-700 will give me everything without going over the top... what does it offer, and what do the higher end models offer as well as the SB-700?

Just updating an old thread
I have just bought the Nikon sb600 and haven't got a clue how to use it other than auto modes
I'd really like to try and understand this flash more as well as recreate some of the pictures showed above with the rear curtain sync
