Yes
I've been using Corel Graphics Suite courtesy of work, It does most of the things I want. However it is starting to introduce errors such as this:

Ive got a canon eos 400D and the bundle software is pretty good but doesn't do all the jobs, Straightening for example.

I'd like photoshop but at the £400-£500 pound mark its too pricey.

I want a package that will work with my Canon RAW files, and do the straightening, levels and so on and maybe some HDR if I can.

The market is big and boggling, so what's out there worth having? and what are the limitations?

Am I right to think Elements is a mini photoshop for the amature?

yes £500 is a lot of money and if there is something cheaper than that would be a good idea. I've personally used Photoshop for more years than I care to admit to ( I started with 2.5!!!!).

Elements as a program has expanded it's facilities considerable over the last 2 releases, and I am constantly impressed with what you can now do with Elements that only a few years ago was the domain of the heavy hitting Photoshop.

Nobody really makes use of everything in Photoshop. I don't use the graphics tools.I don't know what tools you need, but you can find out thanks to Adobe.

You can download 30 day trials of both Elements and Photoshop from the adobe web site.

Here's the link

Start with Elements. Photoshop will swamp you when you start. Elements is a lot easier. Plus a lot of the skills you learn with Elements will carry you through to Photoshop if you decide to go that way. I suspect though that you'll find Elements will do most if not everything you want.

Scout around the web for tutorials. You'll find that helpful. Check them out first so that you get the most from your 30 day trial.

Trial downloads of Corel Paint Shop Pro and Adobe Lightroom are available for download from Corel's and Adobe's websites.
You could also have a look at the GIMP, which is free and can open raw files if you install UFRaw. It seems to be capable of doing what you need to do. The interface is a little different, but you can see me working with it on some basics here:

I did that video for someone else on this website.

Corel Paint Shop Pro X3 can open some raw files and for the money, it's not a bad package.
Neither is Photoshop Elements.

GIMP, UFRaw and RawTherapee do the job well for me, though.

What about Paintshop Pro? I remember using very early editions and heard that the latest ones are very good. Not sure about the price tag but was pretty reasonable in the past.

EDIT: I don't use it but I'm sure I've seen people on here that do that could advise?

Can help you with Lightroom but not Corel I'm afraid... Sold my soul to Adobe

Chappers post makes a lot of sense, and Elements is probably the direction you should be going in (IMO)
