which software

i am a beginner had want some editing software. I have tried gimp but do not like it and was wondering what version of photoshop to get and how much it will set me back.

photoshop elements is very good, price depending on what version you get.

5 6 7 or 8......

cs is much more advanced.

Photoshop Elements will do most of what you want as a photographer but Photoshop CS4 is definitely better BUT more expensive. If you are a student or live with one you can get CS4 for £129. There are FREE alternatives which are OK but the industry standard package has to be on the list. Personally I use Photoshop CS4.

Download a trial of PSE 8 and also try Lightroom, both can be got from the Adobe web on 30 day trials.

My advice would be to download the trials of Lightroom and Photoshop Elements (and Aperture if you're on a Mac) the Adobe site will tell you the prices too

Paint.net is free and good. Lots of plug ins which make it better.
Easier to learn than the Gimp IMO.

Picasa3 is free and very easy to use but a bit limited.

Corel Paint Shop Pro is pretty good as well and can be very cheap, but most tutorials you find will be geared toward Photoshop.

ive use photoshop before for my advertising but used the trial version to design flyers etc so cant get it. I will go for the photoshop as my brother is a student and will get a reduced discount of £45 i think need to investigate further but thanks everyone for your suggestions.
