Kodak BW400CN
Fuji Neopan400CN
Ilford XP2 400ASA

why are they all 400.............:shrug:

can I get say 100 or 200 ASA...?
 
Not in C-41 that I'm aware of, John - which is pretty much why I started developing and scanning my own.

When you get into that, there's plenty of "proper" black and white slow film

Ilford [/FONT]Pan-F+ 50 - lovely fine grain

Fuji Acros 100 - though I usually shoot it as 80 ISO :shrug:

Ilford PanF 50 ISO. I have one in my K-1000 right now.
 
Or Ilford FP4 as an old favourite.

or are you looking only for C41 process? In which case, I think you're out of luck.

But do remember that FP4 is a 125 ISO.

Worth taking into account when exposure is critical.

Maybe time to take your business elsewhere then?

I am currently looking at sending my film 500 miles down the road...visiting Cape Town next week.
 
It all depends on how large you want to make your prints.
If it's for web use (Note;anything up to iso1600 is fine) FP4+ is fine and gives you enough speed to handhold in most situations.
All depends if you are scanning or printing.

If you want to make really large prints then I used to pull FP4+ to iso 64.
You could try a slower film, but how often in the UK can you shoot anything slower without a tripod?

Guess b+w C41 is only 400 due to market size.

On a slightly unrelated topic, yesterday I saw some files from the new Portra 400 pushed to 3200, a bit heavy on the contrast but almost grain free..:):)

What's a reasonable cost?

Peak Imaging do 36 Exp. b/w for £4.44 and they're reliable. (£1.75 p&p on a single film or £3.05 up to 15) Freepost to send.

A quick google found DigitalLab in Newcastle, who'll do it for £4.05 + £2.50 p&p for up to five films.

The Darkroom UK do 35mm,120 Film Dev only inc. p&p for £4.90 and have a freepost address for you to send to.

Or you could do it yourself at home.

I inadvertantly shot some XP2 at 100, and it still came out useable even developed at 400, although really lacking in contrast. I'd think as long as you made it perfectly clear that it needed developing at 100, you'd be happy with the result.
 
I used to love Pan F for fine grain portraits and big enlargements, but for general use it is slow as others have said. I used to deveop it in Acutol which gave a whole half stop effective increase in speed to 75 ASA.

I'd probably go with FP4 for general mono shots.

Sorry - for C41 processing I'd probably go with XP2.
