Yes
I'm looking to get my wife a camera for her Birthday in March which would also double up as a 2nd body for me when I am out taking pics at donington or whichever track I am at at the time.

I've narrowed it down to either a New Canon 400D or a Used Canon 30D but I can't decide which to go for.

I'm leaning towards the used 30D option as the cost is similar to that of the 400D when purchased new (body only) for what should be a better camera.

The reason i'm asking is that finding a decent used 30D that someone is shipping on might not be the easiest thing to do given my fairly limited timescale and since it is her Birthday present the thought of buying her a 2nd hand camera just doesn't sit right.

Funds won't stretch to a 450D/40D and above unfortunately so my choices are limited.

Oh and the reason I'm chosing Canon... it saves doubling up on lenses.

The 400D is a very capable camera
If your lady has smallish hands it also might be a better "fit"
I understand your reluctance to buy second hand as well.
For those reasons, I would recommend the 400D

:agree: as it's a pressie new is good!
anyway you don't want her having better hardware than you!

For what it's worth, I bought the missus a 2nd hand 30D with the idea of repossessing in emergencies....no problem encountered so far.....but that doesn't mean that it won't rise to the fore in tiff in 5 years time

As i've got the 40D I'm ok on that score, I wouldn't want her to get the 5D though....

Or would I?

I did something i hadn't thought of... since she was the one that decided on getting a camera for her birthday, I asked her!

New camera, or higher spec 2nd hand camera....

She said it being 2nd hand is irrelevant and wants the 30D as its the better camera :D

sounds like a result to me
& u get the brownie point for wanting to get her the new 1

well done, sir
