Folks,

Wasn't sure if this went in computing or here.....

I have ordered a new laptop which should arrive before xmas. (a very nice Nebula Red Alienware :) )

I would like to be able to set the screen up properly so want to buy a calibrator. Any suggestions?, budget isn't the big issue, value and capability is more important to me.

I looked at the Spyder 3, but wasn't sure if the Pro was enough or should I get the Elite ?

Thanks for any input folks...

I have the Spyder 3 Pro which I bought after asking a similar question to yours on this very excellent forum. It is simplicity itself to use and the difference it made to my editing was incredible. Worth every penny IMHO.

Plus one!

Hmmm any alternatives to the spyder ?

Or is that the best out there ?

I have a Huey pro... good enough for me, and easy to use. ( you don't need the pro unless you set up extra screens)

I have the Huey Pro and what a difference its made to my editing. I was having problems with my images always being darker than I was seeing them. Im very pleased with the results and it keeps checking the ambient light and adjusting accordingly. What I see is now what I get.

X-rite...

Works well...but havent used it in a while...

Spyder Elite helps you set luminance/brightness which, according to my research, the pro does not.

I had a huey pro, it died recently (after reading seems my problem was common) so just ordered a Spyder3Elite as it has just dropped in price quite a bit. The Pro seems to do a lot of the standard stuff so a great start. You can upg to Elite if you need to in the future as the device is the same it is only a software upg. My Elite should arrive today according to the royal mail site :)

DataColour website has discount code "loyalspyder" which gives you 20% off if you decide to go with them. Just purchased Spyder3Elite upgrade 4.0 at discounted price.

ColorMunki Photo is hard to beat but does cost more than Spyder 3 and Huey Pro.

I've had the Huey Pro and have to ColorMunki and the latter does calibrate the monitor more accurately.

ColorMunki Photo here too...I calibrate two monitors each having its own videocard.

With the ColorMunki you can also produce various profiles for printers and projectors.

If it is only for screen calibration you may well be better with the lower priced alternatives.

Thanks for all the answers folks....

Investigating the colourMunki as I don't know much about it...

if your not using multi scrren on one computer then pro is enough,i have pro but wish i went with elite as its all done in the software, where as pro you have to manually adjust the brightness of the monitor, cant remember if i had to adjust anything on my laptop, apart from stteing it to standard.
Isn't a manual hardware adjustment always better than a software correction?

I wouldnt realy say any is better, eles we would all do manual adjustment for calibration full stop. manual is just a pain, to get in to my setting the menu is bang in the middle of the screen where the device sits , so i have to move that about(not a big problem), but i have on the same computer 32bit win 7 and 64bit with one monitor, so when i calibrate both os on the same monitor there is a slight difference in brigtness(dont know why) but it just means i have to cheack it everytime when i do p&p where as if i had brought elite it would just adjust the graffix card everytime saving me having to do it.

If you are thinking about printer calibration as well then go for the spyder print studio. You get the elite spyder for the monitor as well as the printer calibration tool. It's better than the colormunki

ColorMunki Photo here too, I've owned a few others and these beats them by a long shot, they now also do one for screens only (no print matching) which is cheaper but gets equally good reviews

The pro still does multiple screens. Just make sure your graphics card can handle multiple profiles

yeah but it cant adjust the brightness when it is set for one os, then i switch to the other the brightness is set fot the first os not the 2nd os, or am i missing something.
