Which scanner

So I've bought the RB67, been up in the loft and found my old film processing equipment, and now I need a scanner. From all that has been said I am almost certain it will be an Epson Perfection, but which one? The V500 will do the job perfectly well, but what would the benefit be of getting the V550 or V600 over that? The price isn't too much more, so if the benefits are worth it I would rather get the better one. I think the V700 would be overkill unless I go to LF but if I do it will be some way off.

They're all much the same with minor tweaks get what ever can be had cheapest.

Well I always give the same advice:- as most Epson flatbed scanners are quite good for MF negs you should consider older S\H ones as well e.g. 3200 or 4990 even Ken Rockyaboat gets it right sometimes http://www.kenrockwell.com/epson/4990.htm
But if you are not worried about money, there have been some VG shots posted here with guys using the V500.

I have just bought a V550, mainly because I couldn't actually find a V500 cheaper at the time other than on ebay, though I am sure they are around. I even considered the 370 but figured I might as well go for the higher scan resolution. General consensus seems to be that they are all very capable and will do you very well.

Thanks for all the replies. I had a look on the Epson site and couldn't really see much difference between them. As Yv said, the V550 seems to be the cheapest I can find (new) so will go for that one. Now I just need a trip to Brighton to pick up the chemicals and I will be ready to go :)

According to teardowns and in-depth reviews that I've seen previously on a couple of sites, the V500, V550 and V600 use identical hardware except for having different casings and the only real differences are in some minor software functions that most probably won't even use or benefit from; they also appear to have practically identical quality and resolve the same resolution. To be honest all flatbeds have very similar quality characteristics, and to get any sort of improvement over them you really need to go for a dedicated film scanner.

I have a 4490 that i bought for £40 used and its very good for MF

I need a new scanner as well but I think Im going to buy a new computer first!

Build it yourself...those old boards with CPUs that overclock are still fast....I'm typing this with a CPU that came out about 6 years ago and the computer is running at 3.9GHz and 24 large thumb nail jpgs flash up on the monitor so quick.even without a super duper graphics card.
