Which satnav?

integrated is the way to go - no fannying about with apps and the phone stays in your pocket far less distracting

Having the phone on the dash in a proper hands free mount is much safer and less distracting mad should you need to take a call you can do so safely via hands free. It's just human nature to want to check the phone if it rings over and over while in a pocket, on the dash you can see it's just a PPI scam call and ignore it.

I was using my 12 month old Garmin this year to help finding my way around the Highlands in a campervan, I loaded a lot of POI's into it before setting of from Cornwall, we stopped overnight at Lancaster Services, come morning switched on the Satnav only to find that the screen had froze, I spent an hour or so trying to get it to work without success, ended up buying a very expensive replacement in the Services, I am hopeless with a map, short term memory, I forget whatever within a few minutes so a Satnav is an absolute must have for me.

What I did not know at the time was that there is a simple on the spot remedy which is to reset the unit, if that fails connect it to your com an update it, the second option is the one that brought my Satnav back to life even though it was updated before setting off, what im trying to say is that there must be others, who if it freezes have no idea how to fix it, so my advice is to look up how to unfreeze what ever the model you have just in case.

Or just use your phone with free software ;)

I can't understand why anyone uses Sat Nav on a mobile , the screens are far too small -
Because: 1) I need one in a car about 3 times a year. The phone does a good job and costs nothing extra.
2) I use my phone on my bike and 3) on foot much more. I'm not carrying an extra costly device around. In fact, a lot of times 4) I don't know I'm going to need it beforehand. The phone is always ready.
Recently I was a passenger in a car where the driver had to first fanny about dialling in letters with a knob. Starting with the name of the city we were in. We had to sit in the underground car park while he did it. 5) With my phone, the route is already sorted in comfort, and checked with email or papers that I've got the right place before we get near a car.
6) Recently it even helped me find where I parked the hire car in a foreign city. 7) And I didn't have to pay rip-off sat nav rental costs for some old tatty sat nav, that I'd have to lug around whilst sight seeing.

The 'slightly' smaller screen is clearly not 'too small'. Let alone 'far too small'. And for me, dedicated satnavs have at least 7 show stoppers, it's just not an option.

Does that help you understand?

Mobile phones on the dash are too much of a distraction and a temptation that's why I prefer integrated - Does that help you understand?

Phone goes in holder and is controller via steering wheel and voice control in the vehicle. Can't see how that is distracting. And with CarPlay it is even further integrated, it is the cpu of your car entertainment system. Fully personalised and displayed not only on the central screen but also at the dashboard information system and any head up display you may have.

Well that is it for me at least.

Each to there own but I don't want the distraction of a phone or clutter on the dash Id rather use the cars system thanks

You are making invalid assumptions there, aren't reading what I wrote, and on top of that moving the goalposts. Hmmm

But you were talking about other people.("I can't understand why anyone..."). I can already understand different viewpoints, including yours. And now, hopefully, so can you, if I explained myself clearly.

Just as an update as this thread has surfaced again:D we are still using the Tom Tom XL it's great :)
It lives in the glove box and just fish it out if we get stuck somewhere and need directions
I'm sure a phone app would have been good too but the satnav is easy to use and the directions are always excellent

Yes. Google Maps is useless without a mobile data signal. It is to be avoided.

TomTom app on Ipad is awesome. 9" sat nav. Great for my old eyes !!

Do you have to look round it to see where you're going

Sat Navs dont use phone signals, they work off GPS which is free

Yep I know :):):)

Yes just make certain you download the maps locally first. A whole country doesn't take up much space.

And yes I know in Wales it can be tough. The vehicles we installed the in vehicle systems in tended to use at least two different mobile data bearers on different frequencies in addition to tetra communication as well. Even satellite signals can be hard at times.

You need common sense in Wales,Cumbria and Cornwall

Take the next right

No because there's grass growing up the middle of the road

In Cornwall, some of the roads with grass growing in the middle are the right way though!!! (Probably the same in Wales and Cumbria.)
