Hi All,

After a little advice.

Im going to get Sat Nav for my 3GS, but can't decide which way to go. Had a look on the App Store and there seems to be a real price difference between the options (tomtom, copilot, navigon etc)...

Also had a look through uTube to check different reviews. Id be interested if anyone here has experience of using one, or a few of the apps on offer...

cheers

dave

Looks like the way I may go. Ive always had tomtom before and really like the user interface... but Ive also heard some good things about copilot... but the price seems too good to be true..

Im also a bit concerned around the tomtom cradle.. do you really need to spend another 100 notes on a cradle?

I have CoPilot and it works really well. The only serious ommision in my book is that you can't paste into the address/Post Code field.

Far more often though I just use Google Maps. It's there, it's free, the routing is as good as any software and the traffic is accurate too.

You don't *need* to, but doing so has several advantages:
  • Improved signal (this applies to any app, not just tomtom
  • Hands free operation
  • Power source so you can use it for long journeys
  • good solid easily adjustable cradle.

I have the cradle and whilst it is now adapted for iPhone 4 (rubber bands and business cards) it's still really good.

If you're doing long journeys you will want to plug it in. The tomtom cradle does improve gps reception. I had one for my 3gs and found that I needed it in my old Audi but not in my current car. Something to do with what's in the glass I understand. I would give it a try before you splash out on the cradle. I've got an iPhone 4 now and that doesn't need to cradle to get consistently good gps reception. As mentioned above, the cradle has other advantages too.

FYI the cradle will also work with other satnav programmes provided you download the free tomtom companion app. Navigon is also good but I end up returning to tomtom. The IQ routes seem to make a difference where I am and the traffic is similarly good. A couple of colleagues use NDrive which is very cheap and they're happy with it.

I've got Co-Pilot (Uk & France) and both have been superb, neither have ever let me down...excellent value for money as well, you won't be disappointed :)

I used the tomtom on my 3g, it was pretty slow and annoying, im hoping that it will be better on the iphone 4 when I manage to sort it all out.

Don't rule out Google Navigator - I've got it on my HTC Desire and it's a dream. Also, above tomtom and many other's, it's Free. £0.00 holds a lot of weight in my book, especially when it equals or outdoes the performance of pay-to-use services.

I'm sure they've ported to iPhone by now (edit, link added)

Also integrates with Google maps, search, streetview et all. Very useful and thoroughly recommended.

It used to be a a little too verbose when giving directions, but that was fixed a couple of updates back and it's never given me a wrong turn since - including navigating Bristol city centre's one-way systems and even taking me round bad traffic on the M5 once.

|Dont think the iphone has google navigation. Not with speech at least :(

co-pilot is fantastic

easy to use and good navigation

Shortly after getting an iPhone (about a month ago) I needed to get a Sat Nav as I couldn't transfer my current one from the Nokia E90.

A friend recommended Skobbler, which ?I have now used loads of times. Therefore I highly recommend it to you. Details can be seen at: http://www.skobbler.co.uk/
The 'Lite' version (which I use) is Free to download from the Apps Store, or there is a £1.19 version which has the Speed Camera warnings included
