Yes
I'm currently looking for some new equipment, but thought i'd post to see if I actually need anything, or for advice on what would be more beneficial for what I shoot.

Currently my kit consists of:
Canon 500D
1.8 50mm
18-55 IS
70-200mm IS f4 L series

I photograph for a MINI club, which is vastly growing, and hard to get everyone in to the shot, so I either result in shooting from a distance, or a few on their own.

A few examples of:

Now I never use my 70-200, which is a shame as it's an amazing lens, would I be able to use this for what I do, or am i better off selling it on for something that is more useable?
I was thinking a more wide angle lens would benefit, however any advice would be great.

You could use the kit 18-55mm, take multiple shots and use a stitch program for panorama views. That way you can afford to keep the 70-200 as well. :)

How about a wide angle lens? They are quite hard to get the hang of but are possibly amongst the most creative lenses you can get.

Problem is i never use the 70-200mm, i've probably put only a few hundred clicks through it, and seems impossible to incorporate to what I shoot.

However advice on a way to use it would be good.

I've considered a wide angle lens many a times, but never known which one to go for, any shops around here all seem to want to sell you anything for anything.

Reckon something like the Canon 10-22mm would be ideal for car photography such as you are interested in, could even do interior stuff then as well

Cheeky bit of bonus critique now, your pics look a bit underexposed to me :)

Hi

As above the Canon 10-22 is a belter of a lens, but if finance is restrictive, the Sigma 10-20 (notF3.5) is a cracker of a lens and cheaper than the canon. I've the sigma lens and am very pleased with the results I get

18mm is restrictive yeah, I find I use the 18-55 alot to get the wider angle on the shots.

What price range should I be looking at for a Canon 10-22mm?

Thank you for the critique, I've recently moved over to a mac and trying to get the brightness at the correct level, my pictures sometimes look fine here, but look at a friends machine and the are slightly different :|

I think you defo need to get the wide angle. So either a Canon 10-22mm or more cost effective Sigma 10-20.

Hopefully this link will work, http://www.flickr.com/photos/mjkcanon/tags/sigma1020mm/ ,Sigma 10-20mm shots on my flickr page.

Just gonna throw one in to the mix. Why not get rid of the 70-200 f/4 IS, get a Sigma 10-20mm and also a 70-200 f/4 NON IS??

Might need a little extra cash to get that combo but you would be gaining range and losing any.....

edit: Just looked on the TP classifieds: 70-200 NON IS around £350, Sigma 10-20 around £320. Could selling the IS cover that?

Thing is the money isn't really an issue, I just think its a shame the 70-200 isn't being used, in fact since I bought it it's hardly been on my camera! I've not been in a situation where I need it, especially for the near 1k price tag. I'm contemplating selling it, getting a wide angle, and a cheaper zoom.

You've got some great captures with your sigma, never really looked at sigma or tamron, but them results are looking good! Have you used any filters along side it?

I had a Sigma 10-20mm, didn't use it much so sold it then realised a lot of my stuff would benefit from a wide angle and picked up a used Canon 10-22mm from the classifieds (still don't use it much, but my daughter does :))

Have got to say the Canon to my eye produces nicer colours and just prefer the whole look of the photos. The Tamron is generally considered to be in third place out of the three mentioned.

Seen some great exterior and interior car shots from this type of wide angle lens, reckon it would be worth getting, could always hire one for a car event and see what you think

If money isn't an issue don't sell the 70-200mm, odds on if you do it will be missed, just seems to happen like that

I tried the Canon 10-22 and could not really see the difference in price on the images, compared to the Sigma.

Filters? Yep, got a CPL, LPL and a ND8. Just need to watch when filter stacking and showing at the wide end.

Tokina 11-16 :D - think they do them in Canon mounts.

For stitching program, a free (sorta demo) version -> autostitch

Keep the 70-200mm, you may need for panning shots of moving cars... Especially if they are on a track... :D And you've said you like the iq...
Could add a 2x or a 1.4x convertor?
