Hi, i have one of FITP's hilites, two 465 flashes for it , and two sb600's on stands at the front which i use with shoot through umbrellas. What i find is that the lighting isn't very adaptable, and from searching on this forum it seems that this may be due to the umbrellas.

There seems to be a wide range of reflective ones avaliable (silver/white/dimples etc), and i was wondering if there was any advice as to which would suit me best?

regards, Al

try different angles and single fronts or direct/bounced...? just a suggestion if you mean to get different effects/shadows/etc...?

If not forget I posted this...!

Just get cheap white reflective brollies - shoot-thru are good for soft all around light, but so much light is reflected out the back end and then bounced around the walls and roof, and this light can also effect your subject from all directions.

Here or have a look at the Calumet site.

Basically, use shoot through when you want the softest possible lighting from an umbrella (because it can be placed as close as you like to the subject) and also use it as an on axis fill (because it spreads the light very well) but accept that the light is pretty uncontrolled.

Use a white reflective for most other times, the light isn't as soft but is better controlled.

Use a silver reflective umbrella if you want the light to be harder, and get very similar results (but with a warm tone) by using a gold reflective umbrella.

This article on light shaping tools in the Lencarta Learning Centre may help.
