Which Red Snapper Tripod?

I was in exactly the same boat as you last night. It was initially between the Giottos MTL9251 or a Red Snapper. I went for a Red Snapper based on the amount of cracking reviews I have heard about them and how close they come in comparison to being a cheaper alternative to a Manfrotto.

I decided to go for the RS-284 based on it having a shorter folding length to carry around with me. I also went for a ball head as it has better max. load, and can offer more precision. Total £99.

I don't know all drawbacks in comparison to a Giottos tripod as I am waiting to receive it within the next few days. But based on the reviews, I'm hopeful I have made the right decision.

benefit of the 4-section is that it will fold into smaller size.

disadvantage is that, it is shorter when extended compared to 3-section.

Some also suggest that 4-section may be less sturdy since you'll have thinner 4th section.

I can't compare with Manfrotto or Giottos, but redsnapper tripods do look very strudy.

I have only used it once so far, but it was a very windy day and it wasn't moving at all.

One thing people may not like (compared to manfrotto or giottos) is that RS uses "twist and grip" locks rather than the usual clips. I think this may get sometime used to (and I am being cautious at the moment as I've heard some of them coming apart if you loosen it too much).

As good as the Manfrotto as far as mine is concerned! the 283 does not pack down as small/short as the 284 but other than that they are the same really.

Personally, I prefer the twist grips - on a cold day at least. And also they do not loosen up over time (months/years) because the legs get bent in and you then have to stick cardboard down the edge to get a good grip... etc.

I like the twistys for speed n ease of use. You can twist both on a leg at the same time and then let it drop. Only takes a 60-90 degree twist to lock up.

I have the 4 section so i can get lower, i find it is as robust as i need and never had a problem with it using a grip head.

I use the 3 section one as wanted the extra height, certainly can't complain about it at all and rock stable when i have used it - definately recommended!

Currently Redsnapper also have christmas offers on as well

The 284 is good because it fits in the bag with a 3 way head attached. Is the bag bigger for the 283 or not? Its really useful being able to fit in the bag with the head on! I'm using a 284 and love it.

My 283 fits in the supplied bag with the head on as well, no problems, don't believe they are different bags as i'm sure I only saw the one availiable on Redsnappers site.

Anybody tried the Carbon one?

Is it worth it?

Cheers

Count me in too! It looks like great value for money.

I just got a 283 with Ball Head for Xmas [courtesy of Mrs FWN] wish I had seen the 10% for TP users first "DOH" "Ces't la vie"

Impressed so far I can't wait to get out and have a proper go with it

Hi,

I understood from Joe at Redsnapper that the Christmas special prices are lower than normal so the 10% discount isn't available on them so i think Mrs FWN will have got the best price possible.

Best wishes,

Tracey
