My son (20) will be visiting 6 European countries over a month in the summer. His old digital camera was very basic and rather large and cr*p to be honest so he has asked for another for Xmas which is pocket sized for travelling.

Now Im no stranger to all the features of the cameras while trying to choose... but there is one thing Id like to ask you all you feelings on before I decide.

Some are charged by a lead from the battery to the wall... needs a european charger but not much faffing. They will be staying in hostels so electric shouldnt be an issue from day to day.

Or

2xAA batteries which can be replaced anywhere, but will keep costing him money, which as a Uni student is an issue.

Any thoughts please, or any other methods I havent thought of?

Rechargable lithium battery plus euro/world adaptors, will work out cheaper in the long run.

Where I have the choice, I have always gone for rechargeable AAs. He'd need a European adapter and the charger so there is the initial outlay. I've had a quick look on Amazon: charger plus 4 @2500mah rechargeable batteries £13:68 or 12 Duracell AAs £6:12. I don't know how quickly the camera goes through a pair of AAs. There must be a calculation that tells you where break even is.

Thanks chaps. SO when looking I shouldnt be looking for power supplied by ALkaline batteries. I must choose a camera that says nicad or whatever?

wht I mean is...............will they take normal one-use AA's as well as taking rechargeables if desired. So he could recharge when necesary but if he is caught out with none he could buy normal ones... or doesnt it work like that?

As long as a camera will take AA size batteries, it will almost certainly be happy with either NiCads, NiMH (better than NiCad) or Alkaline batteries (obviously, check with the retailer that this is the case but I've never had a problem). Most that take 2 AAs will also take a CR-V3 (Lithium) battery (again, check with the retailer - it should say in the camera's manual).

Thanks... I will start my search!

Hi Janice,

I use the new Lithium AA disposables. The package says that they'll take around 660 shots on a compact, and at that rate, he'd only need 2 or 3 sets, and not have to worry about charging them abroad at all!! I'd imagine that these are freely available abroad in the eventuality he ran out.

Are they the Energizer lithium photo, Doug? I bought some for my flashgun for a wedding and they did very well. I'd forgotten about those!!
