Could you please recommend me a flash? I currently have a sb400 but I'm disappointed when shooting vertically as it occasionally cast's a shadow.
I was looking at the sb700 but then read about flash rings as they only seem to be used in fashion portraits which is exactly and only what I shoot. However I can't find a nikon product only sigma.

A cheaper ringflash (to put it simply), will be one made for macro photography, only strong enough to illuminate something small, at a close working distance.

If you want to look at ringflashes used in fashion, google profoto ringflash, Elinchrom Ringflash, Broncolor and so on.

You will find STARK differences! Maybe £1500 or so.....

A flash is a flash, the more you pay, the more features and power you get. SB400s are awful. Get an SB600 or better if you can, loads of modifiers available, including something called an orbis ring which fits onto your SB and acts similar to a larger more expensive ringflash, but nowhere near as good or powerful.

It also sounds as though you may be using the flash all by itself - if so google "soft lighting" and have a read. Also lok at getting the light off camera as it will give you so much more control.

If I'm teaching you to suck eggs - sorry !
