Hi,

My wife would like a `Pocket Camera` for Christmas.

I think thats what they are called? You know the small compact ones that fit in your pocket or in her case bag.

What one would you advise on buying?

It needs to be something simple but with good quality pictures.

Many thanks in advance. :)

thats a good Q there are so many and the one i got my wife -a rollei - was really naff
so curious to see what people suggest

i have allways used sony compact cameras and had good results
also noticed that argos seem to have a fair few cameras with money off at the moment

a nikon cool pix should go into a pocket minus case
L19 is the latest and if as good as the L18 my daughter has...i would recommend
i dont keep a massive list of cameras though...there are bound to be others

The Panasonic TZ series or FX get good reviews (I have a Panny TZ65 and am well pleased with it, when I don't want/need to lug my DSLR with me...)

Another vote for the Panasonic TZ's here - I've a TZ-6 which does pretty much anything I want from a point-and-shoot. Yeah, for me, it'd be nice to have a proper manual mode, but that's because I'm a luddite, and come from a background of wanting to be able to set every little thing - but i've got lots of film and digital cameras that I can do that with - the TZ-6 gives a decent filesize for enlargements/allowing a bit of creative cropping, automatic modes for pretty much anything you can point a camera at, and a lens that's the equivalent of a 25mm-300mm zoom on a full frame 35mm camera. I'm very happy with it, and can't see myself swapping for anything at the moment.

As you have a Canon dSLR already, I would suggest getting a Canon 'point and shoot', for the simple reason that you can use exactly the same software for both cameras, and process them in exactly the same way.

Me neither, is this similar to the FS7, even the Panasonic website doesn't seem to list it?

ive got a nikon coolpix P5100, although not the smallest it goes in my pocket no problem.. great compact camera

was sucked in by the ads and bought the panasonic TZ5 but sold it as preferred the manual settings I have on the nikon

Many thanks for all of the replies.

There is plenty of information that has given me food for thought.

I will look at all the suggested choices and let you all know how I get on.

Thanks

I have a Canon Ixus 100 IS, great camera and very compact and smart looking. Not so good if you want super zoom (like the TZ7), it only does x3 optical. But it does everything else, HD video and all that plus a sweet macro mode. Picture q' is on par and its handy to have with me at all times. Reccommended from me, way slimmer than alot of compacts.

I bought my dad a canon ixus 80 for his birthday a wee while ago and it's cracking.

Just went to have a play with a bunch of cameras at lunchtime and I liked the Panasonic range for the pricepoint I was looking at (£120-£150). They were very solid and well constructed, some of the others I looked at Olympus, Sony and Canon had less solid controls unless you moved up in price.

I ended up buying a Lumix FS15 rather than the FS7 as the small price premium gave you a wider angle lens and 12.1M pixels.
