Which platforms can I share my images on without the website doing a rights grab?

Looking at various platforms where to share images ie Facebook, Twitter etc everywhere you upload an image allows the organisation to use, reproduce your images etc. How do you share images without organisations effectively helping themselves to your images? Is there any concerns sharing them here on TP?

How do you find publish your work nowadays without effectively giving it away?

I don't currently see my work as that valuable, however I don't think that other organisations should potentially be able to help themselves? Is the solution simply to print only? Help! I'm totally confused!

It's the source of a lot of f***wittery around FB etc.

The only surefire way of ensuring no one else has a right to share your images, is to buy your own hosting and do it yourself. And the only way to ensure no one steals your images, is to not post them anywhere.

* it ought to be obvious, but they can't, so their T's & C's ensure they can go about their business with as little hassle as possible and by having as few rights as they need.

But I wouldn't dream of giving an image to the BBC. For an organisation I admire so much, I hate the way they abuse amateur talent.

I think a lot of the hosting services cover themselves with a caveat that they could use the images for advertising their services. I use pbase, a low cost paid for hosting service, never known them to use images for commercial purposes, although they do link to images of the day etc.

Ah see when you put it like that, it totally makes sense! I did wonder when so many pros show all their images etc on social media, are they not concerned!

I completely agree with the BBC I think their music side of things is the same with the BBC introducing. Just wrong for the BBC to do that!

Is there any concerns sharing them here on TP?

I've always separated my forum memberships from the hosting of images - there is always the potential issue that you fall out with a forum and lose access to the material you've submitted, including any images hosted in galleries but also the words you've typed. Been there, done that, not getting caught out again - the short version is that you should bear in mind that forums can be bought and sold, you won't always be dealing with the same owner(s).

TP has decent enough terms for photos shared, they're pretty standard. However, I wouldn't personally post a tutorial or article I'd invested significant time or expertise in authoring. The present wording on terms relating to reproduction rights is just a little loose.

If only that were true...
I think a lot of it is that lawyers write the contracts with a lot of CYA terms in them... including rights/waivers they don't need and (hopefully) may never use.

If you upload a photo to be shown on the web I am guessing you have to give them some right to show your photo, remember it's their website not yours. so some permission to reproduce it has to be given.

Yes, some rights must be granted, specifically the right to make copies and the right to publicly display. They do not *need* any additional rights in order to share your images/work.

Yahoo/Flickr have one of the best TOS in this regard with the explicit limitation "“solely for the purpose for which such Content was submitted or made available."
