If you are finding that the ones in your newsagent are full of topics you already know about, try some of the pro mags instead. I get mine from Borders which stock a fair number. There is Professional Photographer (amateur photographer's big brother) Digital Photo Pro (UK and US versions) and I have to say personally I still like Digital SLR Magazine. http://www.digitalslrphoto.com/
The contributors are all top notch.
It's just a shame that each month most of the mags have pretty much the same content. If one does a HDR special then some of the other do the same month. If one has a B&W special, then some of the others do too - and not just the ones published by the same company either.
It's almost like there are spies in the camp and pass on the content to rival mags and then they have the same feature that month.
Digital photographer is my choice they usually have a good mix of articals and appeal to both dslr and p&s users also they do good detailed reviews.I agree they can only do so much I mean ive seen a auto photography feature twice in 6 months in digital photographer.
I was about to subscribe to Digital Camera magazine when my partner said -" Why don't you just buy the magazines with the articles that you will learn from or find interesting as apposed to subscribing to one magazine and hoping that each month it'll contain something helpful and informative!"
So that's what I do. I browse through all mags on sale each month and chose the ones I want!
If you are near a Borders, do what I do....go in and read them for an hour without buying any of them!
Despite being a Nikon man, as a magazine I really like the Photo Plus (canon edition) magazine. Has anyone ever come across a Nikon version?
Also like Digital Photographer.
The benefit of subscribing is that you get free stuff. Even after giving you a £ 40 - £ 60 gift, they still make more money that way then if you buy the copy every month from WH Smith or the supermarket.
I subscribe to Digital SLR Photography & Practical Photography.
It costs me a fortune having them sent to the US every month, but the American Magazines are awful. Hardly half the thickness of the UK ones and full of adverts and lots of text - very few photographs. Not very inspiring

because I advertise in a car magazine, I can read Practical Photography and Digital Photo online in pdf format (as well as the magazine chains whole range of mags - Car / MCN / What Carp? )
I quite like Digital SLR User and Amateur Photographer. As somebody said previously, they rehash articles on a yearly basis, which you can kinda understand with things like landscape photography as the seasons have a big effect but some of it is just basic laziness. I would prefer a lot more on the inspiration side of things rather than another bloody article or free DVD with photoshop tutorials. For me magazine like Lenswork, Photoicon and other mags of that ilk are where it's at. You can check out the work of others and sit there dreaming that one day you could make something that good. For the same reason I probably prefer photo books to mags but that is way more expensive and probably suited to another thread.
DIGITAL PHOTO, not only do you get the magazine you also get a tutorial CD mostly for Photoshop + extras, the price is not bad concidering you get the cd included. Very compatible to other mags.
Magazines? I flick through many on the news agent shelves and anything that is intresting I will get.
However recently I have take subscriptions out for Ag and Silvershotz, both fine art mazazine and quite expensive, but the quality of the images and the articles (no "its Autum lets do interesting colours" or the latest equipemnt reviews) to me is great.
Certainly make you look at the world in a different way.
Also another British magazine called Hotshoe is also a good read.
