Which photography books for a beginner?

Can anyone recommend me some beginner books to start out with? I'm interested in photographing animals/wildlife, portraits and landscapes mainly.
 
I'm sure the one book that almost everyone will recommend to you is 'Understanding Exposure' By Bryan Peterson - a fab book and a must for anyone interested in photography.
 
When I started out back in november I bought a couple of these 'Beginners' books which just confused the hell out of me. I then read a thread on here suggesting that a good book for beginners was 'Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. Anyway, I went out an bought it and I have to say it's the dogs danglies! Hope that helps.
 
Another handy book to start off with
The Digital Photography Handbook by Doug Harman
Covers a lot.
 
Another for 'Understanding Exposure'. 'Tis a book you won't grow out of too quickly either.

and
Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson (Paperback - Aug 1991)
 
I read Understanding Exposure (2nd one),its really good on explaining everything.A must have :)
 
I am halfway through Understanding exposure and it is a great read. I thought I was reasonably aware of how ISO, aperture and shutter speed git together but this book has opened my eyes.

Well both books arrived today - so looks like I am sorted for bedtime reading for next few weeks!

Got mine from Amazon - both fairly cheap and very quick delivery. Although just seen other thread about Understanding Exposure price - so could of saved a couple of quid on that one.

Totally agree.

Remember you don't have to buy it straight off, I borrowed it from the local library before I decided to buy it. I did this with my book on photoshop too. :lol:
 
Understaning Exposure is extremely detialled about the ISO, Apeture and Shutter speed, when to use each of them and how they all work togethor.

Another book, "The Photography Bible", is not as detailed, but explains about many more things such as filters, different lenses, flashes, etc etc.

Ive read both and learnt alot from them, id deffinately reccomend both.
 
Yet another vote for "Understanding Exposure". Great read and really helped me :thumbs:

Only just got round to reading 'understanding exposure' but just want to say it makes for a very eye opening book with loads of "I see" moments. Definatley recommended.
 
Do places like WH Smiths stock this book? Or Waterstones?
 
I bought it but I can't say I'm convinced as to how brilliant it is. I prefer a straight forward manual, where you can find the information you require presented in a more scientific way and not with his patronising explanations of "the worker bees bucket". I'm afraid his style rather irritates me.:shrug:
