Yes
I always enjoyed taking photos and I had a bridge then a dSLR, but this photo was the one that opened my eyes to photography in a more serious way and made me want to really improve my skills.

It was completely by accident, shot in auto mode on auto focus but it was the first time I had seen a really shallow depth of field in one of my shots, and afterwards I knew it was a better photograph than any others I had taken, but I didn't know why. Taking this shot was the start of my exploration into actually how to use my camera and how to deliberately take photos like this on purpose.

It's by no means a great photo, the focus is slightly out, the flash is too harsh and the background too dark, but this was the start. A few years later and underneath is the shot of my niece again, but this time on purpose.

So did you have a similar experience or did you see other photos from other people that inspired you to get better? Please post your pic and your story.

I try to open my eyes with all the photos I take. I find that if you don't, you can never be sure exactly what you are photographing.

really?

I use the force myself, you must let it run through you and then there is no need for opening eyes!

Is that one eye or both

Getting back on topic, I've seen loads of photos that inspired me and which I realistically know will be beyond me, but it's always fun trying to get there.

This is one of the 10 pics I took with my first DSLR (I'd been a 'snapper' with a compact before this)

I just thought WOW, did I do that?

This taken with a Canon P&S reawakened my interest in photography after many years away from my old film SLR days....

Dekhog thats a stunning image, very intimate.

This was mine. It was my first documentary project and it helped me on the path to the kind of work I eventually want to achieve.

I reckon its all in the camera, anyone going from a 450d to a 7d, knows that it must have been the equipment that did it! ;)

Being less silly my favourite photo and the one which has inspired me more than any other was this one.

It was taken on an old Nikon F5 in a very dark stone walled pub on mothers day this year.

All manual with an 85mm f1.8 lens.

I wouldn't say that any particular photos of mine opened my eyes.
Instead, a few years ago I was off work for 5 months suffering from severe depression. I needed to find something to help pass the long days. Back then I had a simple P&S which I started experimenting with and used as part of my therapy to help me appreciate the world around me.
Apart from the therapy side of things, I soon started developing a real interest in the art of photography and post processing. Obviously being a simple P&S, my creativity was stiffled a little, so I treated myself to a 350D.
WOW! What a difference - even with just the basic kit lens a whole new world was opened up.
So, rather than a single image, it was what photography could do for me that opened my eyes.

Probably this one, shot with my old Olympus slr (film) but it was the first shot i tried playing with the settings to try
and get some sense of movement in the cars.

If that made any sense....
