I always enjoyed taking photos and I had a bridge then a dSLR, but this photo was the one that opened my eyes to photography in a more serious way and made me want to really improve my skills.
It was completely by accident, shot in auto mode on auto focus but it was the first time I had seen a really shallow depth of field in one of my shots, and afterwards I knew it was a better photograph than any others I had taken, but I didn't know why. Taking this shot was the start of my exploration into actually how to use my camera and how to deliberately take photos like this on purpose.
It's by no means a great photo, the focus is slightly out, the flash is too harsh and the background too dark, but this was the start. A few years later and underneath is the shot of my niece again, but this time on purpose.
So did you have a similar experience or did you see other photos from other people that inspired you to get better? Please post your pic and your story.
shot with my canon 450d and kit lens in 2008
shot with my canon 7d 85mm 1.8 in 2010
