Hi,
I am very new to photography and I am enjoying it. I would like to buy a programme so I can upload my photos onto the computer and edit them but I dont know which programme is the best to get. Any advice is welcome.
Thanks, Lisa

It depends what you want it to do and how much you are willing to spend.

There is Photoshop Elements 8 if you are on a budget and I think you can get plug-ins for it to make it more functional.
Alternatively you could get photoshop CS4 (expensive) which does everyhting you can imagine.
The above are both by Adobe and are the most commonly used.
Not sure what is available from other companies.

More people will be along shortly with advice!

As Stupar has said, depend on what you want to do and how much.
Other non Adobe options are Corel Paint Shop Pro, or both Gimp and Paint.net are free, so you could always test the free ones for their editing abilities and decide if they are sufficient for your needs.
What camera have you got/planning to get? Some of the editing software that comes with the camera can be sufficient for basic tweaking.

There are a lot of FREE editing programs available:

Photoscape is very easy and very good

Serif PhotoPlus is a package I have used for many years in various updates and have found to be excellent for the price.

And there is also The Gimp which many people like but I must admit never to have taken to it.

And there are many other programs all free - just type "Free photo programs" into Google.

I'd recommend Photoshop Elements over CS as its way better value, you get 90% of the features for 1/10th of the price
I got version 6 of Elements free with my laptop, and I use it for the majority of my photo editing, I only tend to open my CS2 for doing web designs.

The only features I really miss from Elements are paths and guides.

I'd agree with Karlos re. Elements over CS - especially for a beginner. I started using CS3 and found I was probably only using 5% of the program's potential. Switched to Elements 8 and loving it!

I really like GIMP  When I first tried it I had absolutely no idea where to start but would have been the same with ps etc....the are so many tutorials out there though that it is very easy to pick up.

my favorite is lightroom you can download a free download to try it works for 21 days i think

What about Paint.NET, for simple things like cloning out objects you don't want? It's a question as I am needed this functionality and unsure.

Hi Lisa, this has been covered loads on this forum, but my opinion is that if you are just starting out Photoshop Elements is probably the best bet, there are tutorials for it everywhere and it is a lot simpler and cheaper than the full version of Photoshop.
