Hi all.
My upgrade is coming up soon, and Vodafone have sent me a million 'reserve your iphone now' e-mails. Of course!

I don't think I want an iphone, so what can you chaps suggest?

Musts:
Big memory, good, and I mean GOOD music player, and of course, must be available on Vodafone!!!
I'm currently using the N95 8GB, and the music player is outstanding!

I'm hearing good things about the HTC's and Android :naughty:

Why not the iphone? Its fits all your musts - 32gb, good music player and on voda...

Vodafone sent me an HTC Tatoo, yuech I sent it right back.

And is probably going to coast about 4 million quid!!!
I'm on a £20 a month tariff, so I know they are going to sting me
I'm not changing tariff, so unless they want to give me a freebie.......

Although I've only been a customer theirs for about 15 years, so I doubt they would.........

if you like the N95, how about upgrading to the N86?

8GB of storage and a good quality camera, has high speed internet and a good browser.

The only problem i have had with it soo far is losing it down the back of the sofa

Sounds good. I shall look into it. Cheers

Have a look at the N97?

Or if you can get on on your contract the new N900 is very good

If you have been their customer for such many years, and are looking at the iPhone but don't want to fork out for it. Why not write to them and tell them of your loyalty, and that you want the iPhone?

Is it a long shot? I do it all the time with a pen / jewellery brand and get lots of preferential treatment, right of first refusal on limited edition items and, yes, freebies. Yes, it works. Will it work it Vodaphone? Only one way of knowing.

Sorry to barge in, but how come you have such a good deal? I'm on £30 pm and get 250 m and 100 t, but they said I'd have to pay some £200 for an upgrade for the N97. And you're paying a tenner less...and have a better phone..??

Phone them and just tell them you've been a loyal customer for a long time ,it worked for me :D

Ive got a nokia n97 mini. It has a good music player, 8 gig internal memory with a slot for another 16 gig.

Overall id say its not a bad phone, it does most of the stuff you need. Email, facebook, internet ect... 5mp camera. Decent size display. Its not an iphone killer but its not bad for everyday use. The touch screen could be more responsive but im used to my itouch which is amazing. lol.

Quick edit... Try looking at the nokia x6. That has 32 gig internal memory and is an xpress music phone with all the goodies plus it has capacitive touch screen which is definitely what you want.

The N97 also has a 32gb internal hard drive, i thought the N97 mini had the same had drive fitted to not a 8gig?

Pretty happy with my N97 long term Orange customer, on £35 per month for 1300min, unlimited texts, unlimted internet.

Nah mate. The mini only has 8gig. Thats one of the cut backs, they also said the mini has no radio built it but mine bloody does lol. Only think that needs sorting with the nokia is that awful ovi store. What a pile of crap that is lol.

Well, I was pretty much the same. Perfectly happy with my previous Nokias etc, despite my daughter and son in law both having iphones. I just couldn't see a need for one. Didn't really need a camera (already have one ;)) why on earth would I need wi-fi, internet access, email etc?

I was wrong... (not unheard of) I bought one just before Christmas and seriously wish I'd done it a couple of years ago, it's that good.

It's worth having a go at them to see just what deal you can get.

i got the n97 when it was first released it made me so mad i nearly stamped on it twice
the worst nokia i have owned and i have 5 mobiles in use all the time
i waited for the first software update to see if it improved which it didnt so i sold it on and got an iphone 3gs
the n97 has 32gb of storage but nothing to run the actual phone the 5800 runs better
the screen is not nice to use either compared to an iphone

Oh believe me, I had weeks of fighting down the phone to get my tariff :bat:

£20 a month and I get 300 mins and unlimited texts (and Vodafone passport, whatever that is  )
I only got that tariff because I played the old I've been a customer of yours for years card!!

But I only ever get a crap phone, or pay loads for it.
I bought my N95 second hand for £250, when they wanted about £400 for one

I might give hem a call in a mo, see what they offer ;)

Thanks for all the advice.
I'm going to do some searching for info on the phones you guys have mentioned.

Vodafone passport lets you make calls to the UK from abroad for 75p + your normal rate from your bundle (incl free minutes I think) - as opposed to £1+ for every minute.

Ah cool, thanks for that

HTC Hero here for me (after 2 years with iPhones - 2g / 3g / 3gs)

If you're into games the iphone is where its at (IMO), but the Hero is a better 'phone' and is a lot more capable as a social interface device (twitter / facebook etc) as the apps can be left open on different pages of the home screen.

I'm liking mine so far - but time will tell once the novelty has worn off.

What's the music sound quality like Chilli?

Like the look of it. Not into 'phone games' in the least........

The MDA Vario II from T-Mobile is an HTC (it was released as an HTC branded phone in the US), it runs Windows mobile, and while it did the job from a work standpoint (synching with outlook, transferring files easily, etc) I wouldn't rate it for what you want. I still have my MDA Vario II as my work mobile (have done for about 3 years now).

When my initial 18 month contract with that phone was up, I got a Samsung Omnia on another deal. Love this phone. Also runs Windows Mobile, but a much newer version. I regularly used this on bus/train rides to work or jobs with a pair of stereo Sony blue-tooth earphones. I'd just have it in my pocket (zipped up, no trailing wires) listening to mp3s, or I'd be watching a video podcast (again, no trailing wires, so it didn't accidentally get tugged off tables or anything).

I believe there's a new Omnia HD out now, but I haven't had a look at the differences yet.

I'm struggling to find something to replace my N95 with too. Its been perfect for me, but is looking a bit tatty now.
I don't want touch screen, I'm struggling with the small keys on blackberries,I like the slide phones with large keys. Maybe I should just find a new N95 and buy it.

Kev.

Oh hadnt relised that, agree on the ovi site, although tbh the phone does all i really want out off the box.

must admit i nearly gave mine back until i downloaded the latest update, seems sorted now.

Very, Very good (better than the iPhone, and my iPod nano, and getting up there with my iRiver H120 HDD Music Player).

I use Meridian Media Player and it plays all media straight from the SD Card (i have a 16gb in there) and you dont need to use iTunes to synce media.

One of the nices things for me so far is live syncing of my gMail contacts - it just works like it should do, first time right out of the box.

they usually do sort it out in the end but i felt like a guinea pig trying this and that
what was even more annoying was i had two 5800's that worked better than nokia's flagship phone

ps russ i remember you from meg

Now I am seriously liking the sound of this baby!
No iTunes makes me like it even more :D

Thanks for the reply. I'll have to find out if Voda do this handset.......

Kev.

I'm a bit like you Kev.
For once, I've got a phone that I'm not desperate to upgrade.
This is the first time I have ever actually liked a phone for more than a year!!!

The N95 8GB sure is a babe, and I'll actually miss it when it's gone.

i have just upgraded from a n95 whilst technically a good phone i hated the thing found it slow to use i wanted the sony ericcson satio but hears to much about hardware failure so in the end i went for an iphone carphone warehouse wanted £85 to upgrade but they offered me £100 as a trade in on the n95 so they had the thing back i'm loving the i phone i would reccomend one

Vodafone don't do the hero (even though I've got one, on Vodafone!!??). Your best bet is Orange or Tmobile if you fancy switching. Mrs Candlestick has got one for about 20 quid on Orange with 250 minutes, 250 texts and 500Mb internet.

It's a class phone though!!!

I ended up buying mine Sim Free from Handtec. Got the 'brown' version as its the classiest looking (IMO)

And gotta agree, it really is a class phone. The Layar app is fascinating.
