Hi everyone, OK, I've been a photography buff for a few years but haven't taken serious photos for a long time, not since the days of my trusty and reliable Praktica BX20 (I did have some godd lenses for it though). My best recent pics have been with a Pentax compact.

Anyway, I'm looking to move into the digi slr market and I'm looking for advice on what outfit to start with.

So far I've been interested in the Nikon D40x and the Sony A100W. I've seen offers with two lenses covering 18mm-300mm so that would suit me fine.

However, before I part with a reasonable sum of money (I'll spend £500-£600) can you advise me if this is the area to be looking in? I've yet to browse the Canon range.

Look forward to your thoughts, thanks in advance,

Phil.

There are pros and cons with whichever make you chose. Nikon/Canon/Sony/....
What you really should do is go down to your local Jessops or wherever and play with all of them. Chose the one that suits you and your pocket best.

I bought my DSLR on sunday, I looked at the nikon D40 and it felt plastic-y.
I looked at the Nikon D80....and I looked at the Canon D400....and then I....Looked at the Pentax K10D and bought that.
I felt it, played with it...preferred it to hold, and I am feeling that I made the right choice.
I paid 778.94p
I got my K10D and a pentax 18-55, I got a sigma 70-300 [It should have been a tamron but jessops didnt have them in stock] a flash [which i havent used yet] a 2gb memory card, a bag and a lens bag [they didnt have the proper bag I shoulda had] and 3-yrs cover incase I drop it...which is maybe likely!!! lol.

My friend paid £650 for Nikon D80 and got the 18-55 lens....and that was it!!!!!!!!

Its upto you, go in and decide whats best for you. Have a feel what you prefer to hold.

Put it in your hand and if it feels right ..... Buy it. The D200 was good for me!

Go for it...
David.

I'd second that. If starting from scratch find a shop with a range in your budget and go play with them. Have all the choices in front of you and keep trying out each one. The one you end up with in your hand after 15-20mins is the one you need to buy.

When I went to upgrade from my D70 I was convinced I was getting a D80. But I was tempted by the D200 too. After playing with the D80 I put it down and was handed the D200, within about 30seconds I'd told the guy to put the D80 away. The D200 just "felt" right in my hands.

I was only choosing which Nikon to buy, but it's the same when you're picking a camera from multiple brands IMO.

OK guys/gals ??

Thanks for the advice, my local Jessops was one of the ones closed so I'll have to travel, no rush though, plenty time to make the right choice.

One thing you might want to consider is future expansion options. Canon and Nikon offer a much wider range of lenses - and a wider range of cameras, come to that - than the other manufacturers. If you think you might get serious about photography (again), then it can help to think about buying into a system rather than just buying a specific camera.

Hey,

Turns out only one of the Jessop's in my town closed so I popped in today and came away with a fine package around the EOS400d (having browsed the net for info).

Fairly standard kit ( two lenses covering 18mm - 200mm, filters, flash, compact flash card and a nifty bag) but a reasonable deal and the usual knowledge from the staff which makes all the difference. So, I can't wait to get going and I'll keep the forum posted with successes and non-successes, (no photo is a failure)!!

Thanks again for the advice.

Phil.

Great. The 400D is a fine camera. Enjoy.

my pockets weren't/ aren't deep, and as an introduction into photography i heard the nikon d40 was a good option, which is the one i got.
