Yes
Not for me but my cousin, I have an a230 and am more than happy with it, been using kit lens for best part of a year and looking to get fresh glass soon.
Anyway onto the question, my cousin is looking to buy his first DSLR, says it's for mostly taking pics of the little one and I've tried telling him that a bridge may be his best bet as he's not really looking to take photography on as a hobby but he won't listen. I think he's leaning towards Sony as we could interchange lenses and he likes my a230, originally he was looking at a special in currys on the a290 for £320 then he saw the a380 for an extra 60 notes and liked the idea of live view, then saw that was being updated with the a390 and has seen this on ebay for just over £400 with lots of little extra bits and pieces. Well when he saw that he saw the a500 for the same price with the same add ons and now he's totally baffled, as am I, he seems to have an increasing budget for something that is going to be used for snapping the bairn. If I can't talk him into bridge which is going to be best for the money. I think he wants live view now so the missus can use it but wouldn't be the deciding factor. So to summarise it's a choice between the a290, a380, a390 and the a500.

Sorry to go on, but any help would be appreciated.

I think the best would be for you to find some time and take a trip with him to your local camera store and take a look at a few options. Have him have a play with some bridge options and DSLR's so at least he would then have first hand experience to weigh up his choices with.

As for the Ebay thing, I just did a search and would it be this one?

This is only my opinion and my opinion only, so don't take my word for it as others may think differently. But looking at all those extra accessories, to me, most of it is "filler" to attract first time buyers. It states, "3 lenses" but in reality it only has one, and 2 adaptors (unknown as to what quality they are). I'd say if he wants the A390, to buy the kit lens set and if he wants to add accessories later, to add them as needed.

tell him to get a fuji hs10. the zoom will let him get right into the kids shots from a distance.

got to agree on the filler comment, it does look like it's there to look like you're getting more for your money

was pointing him toward the sony nex3, would this be a good option, smaller and easier for his wife to handle, more like a compact with the added bonus of interchangeable lenses, on play.com for 350

The Nex-3 looks pretty decent, if he wants the APS-C sensor size and not the Micro 4/3rds then he can also maybe look at the Samsung NX10 and NX100. There are a few more but I think they are fixed focal lengths and fixed lenses so if he wants interchangeable, then it's Samsung and Sony for now.

Lots of Samsung NX10 + 18-50mm lens brand new on Ebay for around £300.

What a bargain!!!!

Samsung NX10 is a cracking camera. Tried one a while ago. Loved it except for the EVF.
