Right ok, last night I took part in a studio shoot set up by the local photography society I joined recently and enjoyed it thoroughly apart from one thing...the lenses I have just didnt suit.

I have a nifty fifty and a 18-55 kit lens, aswell as 70-300 but not worth a carrot when doing portrait as its too long.

So my question is if you going to choose between either a 17-85 IS USM or a 28-135 IS USM which one would you go for?
I did get to use the pro's 24-105 L lens which was amazing but a little beyond the budget right now at like £600 plus.

Comments appreciated

Hmm, the nifty fifty it a superb portrait lens under most circumstances... Perhaps something like a Sigma 24-70 would be better as a zooming portrait lens, but I'd grab my nifty over my 24-105 if doing a portrait shoot....

I agree the nifty took some great shots but it just felt like I was permanently in the poor girls face when taking the pics so just feel that something with a zoom rather than a fixed focal length would be better

Fair enough - you're obviously limited on how far back you can stand then...I'd suggest the Sigma I mentioned earlier in that case.

What about an 85mm 1.8, superb piece of glass, ace for doing portraits providing you have the room, highly recommended.

i have 50mm 1.8 and the 85mm 1.8, but I actually prefer a 135mm f2.8, then again I'm always outside and I'm full frame.

I was going to suggest that :P
Its sharp, contrasty, and for what it can give you its relatively cheap. About half the cost or more of the 85mm 1.4. This is pretty well known as a good focal length for portraits.

Agreed on the Sigma 24-70, I hear that is also a great lens, and Im buying one tomorrow :P but im going to a few shops, as I hear you can get good and bad copies, so im going take test shots, and look around.
