I want to have a go at editing my photographs. I already have Roxio 9 which is very basic compared to some software. I have had a look at the Adobe website but I am unsure as to which one I should download so I can try it.

Photoshop CS5 is what lots of people use, and probably the best others will disagree, but its expensive

others prefer lightroom which is cheaper

Download the software which you think you can afford, be that CS5, Lightroom or Elements. No use trying software which you can never afford.

CS5: £650 ish
Lightroom 3: £230 ish
Elements 8: £45 ish

The choice is yours!

Paint.net - free download
The GIMP - free download
Picasa - free download

Have a play with these and get used to the different functions. You will then have a better idea of what you want when you come to buy something.

For an amateur like me, is CS5 simply far too advanced?
I have used PS Elements 4, for a few years now. Is Elements 8 sufficient for the average photographer?

Like most of us, I use MS Word, but have no idea what 90% of the buttons do, is this a decent analogy when comparing CS5 to Elements 8?

Yes, Elements 8 is a pretty powerful programme in its own right, I use it for anything I do that needs layers etc. There are a few specific things it can't do (CYMK colours for example) but you won't come across things like that in a normal workflow...
