my first proper post and I have something to ask!

I am thinking about getting a new lens for my Sony A200 and am after opinions please.

I am looking at a 70-300m and have got these ones flagged

Sigma f4-5.6 macro DG (about £125)

Sigma f4-5.6 APO Dg (about £174)

sony f4-5,6 Dt at £157 75-300

Tamron Di Ld at £111

what do you think, if any?

Dunno anything about these particular lenses but Google them for reviews and see what comes up. Should give you an idea of which one to go for. As a general rule, you should get the best you can afford:thumbs:

PS, if the money is burning such a hole in yer pocket, you could always send it to me:D

I don't have experience of any of them unfortunately, but here's what I would do:

1) Go to Flikr (or other web based place) and search for photos taken using the lens, so you can see what they are capable of etc.

2) See if there are stores near you where you can try them out and fire off a couple of shots on each lens. You might need to visit a few stores to get them all tried. Get the shots home and examine them.

Good luck!!

Ive got the Canon version Sigma 70-300 APO DG, i didnt think it was a bad lens for the money. Ive changed to a Canon IS version and although a lot more expensive i really notice the difference.

Sigma APO, lots of good reviews for the money. I would discount the cheaper Sigma straight away.
Quite a few Sony users have bought the Tamron recently. Not sure about the Sony.

Have a read of the Dyxum.com lens database. It should have sample images and user reviews of all 4.

What will you be using the lens for? I do a lot of zoo photography and had the sigma APO as my first telephoto on my minolta film camera. I recently gave mine away as I use the sigma 170-500mm for the longer range shots and the beercan for anything in between (but counting down the days to a 70-200mm f2.8). The aperature of the lens means it is better tripod mounted, at its long end it was reasonably sharp especially in good light and I did manage to use it handheld as well. With it not being macro I had issues if an animal was running toward me which is why I asked what your intentions for use is.

There is a secondhand sigma and tokina lens for sale here https://secure.ffordes.com/index.htm I have bought from them before and they were very reliable

I have the APO Sigma and have had some pleasing results with it though I only wish it had IS on board.
