Coming over from Nikon, and having sold my SB-900, I am now left with an Ezybox but nothing to flash thorough it :( I don't have a lot of experience with Canon flash, especially using them off camera. With the D700 it was simple. Use the pop up as a commander and adjust the SB-900 through the cameras menu, thus never having to touch it.

I would prefer to stick with Canon flash(es) but am undecided what route to take. I guess my options are -

580 EX II + Some sort of radio triggers. Would prefer TTL function

or

600EX-RT + ST-E3-RT. - This way I can add flashes at a later date if I want/need to add a second one without having to buy any more triggers or anything but the initial price could be a lot higher.

Your advice on a postcard please. :)

Presumably your new Canon doesn't have a master pop-up flash? That works just like your Nikon system, though it has to be said radio has a lot of advantages, if you need them.

New EX-RT system is the business, though lacks remote second-curtain sync and is pricey. Alternatives include Phottix Odin, Pocket Wizard Mini/Flex, or bargain new Yongnuo 622 triggers. All E-TTL, pros and cons.

Thanks Hoppy, I will have to investigate some of those. Ah, I guess it helps if I say which camera I have. Oops. 5D which of course, doesn't have a pop up.

Does your camera have the ETTL master mode? Does it have ETTL II control in the menu's
If it does, all you need is a compatible slave flash.
If not, then the options are many, I'll stick to the ETTL enabled ones.

Pocketwizard Flex, Yongnuo, Phottix, Hahnel, Pixel King (there are spec differences regarding HSS - so you'll need to read up if that's important) or the STE3 triggers

Or you could go the IR route and use Yongnuo, Nissin, Sigma, Canon all do master and slave flashguns (possibly others too) with or without an STE2 (or YN equivalent)

Of course there's more options if you want to go Manual - and there are differences to controlling depending on your camera too.

The world is your oyster - so you should work out what features are important and what your budget is.

Thanks for the detailed reply. My camera doesn't have wireless trigger built in so I do need some sort of trigger. It's a 5D Mark III. I shall have a read up on all the options and see which fits best.

Then it really depends on budget and what you want to do. I've got some PW Flex's but if I was choosing today I might go for the Yongnuo's they're an awesome VFM alternative.
For the close to the price of a 600ex you could buy a pair of triggers and a couple of flashes
