Which Nikon Teleconverter?

Finally got my new Nikon 300 F4 lens but the 1.4TC I ordered with it has been put on back order.

I have the chance to get the 1.7TC as that's in stock. Unfortunately, I can only get one of the Nikon TCs to go with this lens, my main subjects are birds followed by other wildlife.

Any advice on which is the more suitable TC to start with?

I've just got a 1.7TC for my 300 F4. Also not sure about 1.4 or 1.7 but quite happy so far, pics on the bird forum are the first few shots. I'm sure can only improve.

I have a 300 f4 Nikkor and the 1.4 TC. I feel I could use a bit more reach for birds so will be getting a 1.7 TC.
