which nikon lens?

ok,
i was thinking of getting a nikon 50mm at first, but seem as it might be a while before i get another lens, so i was thinking a zoom lens,
so is that good logic?
if so what zoom should i be thinking of, id like quite a range (maybe a wide angle to telephoto) and preferable able to reach quite a low aperture. also i need it to be below £150, maybe stretching to £200,

Sigma 18-200 lens is really good, you might get a second hand one for under £200. I would go for a good quality second hand lens rather than a bottom end new one. If you look around your local second hand shops or even ebay you will find one
 
What lens(es) do you have now?

At your budget, you are not going to get wide range or wide aperture. Nikon 55-200 (VR), 18-105 VR or Sigma 70-300 APO are some to look at, second hand to stay in budget.

Aint gonna happen Im afraid.
The best you could do is a cheapie 70-300, but it wont have a low (wide) aperture and isnt very wide.

You might get a Sigma 18-200, but again, isnt a very fast lens.

A Nikon 55-200, again nothing special.

You just wont get a low aperture lens for that money, a 70-200 f/2.8 is over £1000 or about £800 second hand.

A 70-300 VR f/4.5-5.6 which isnt very fast either but has the VR is over £400.
 
Nikon 18-105VR. Should be a lot of these coming up SH soon as it is the kit lens on the D7000. 18-70 is better optically, but less range and no VR.
 
18-70 Nikon is a bargin s/h for about £100. Sharp and quick to focus. With yourbudget you will struggle to do better, however it's not a fast lens (large aperture)

edit: it was the kit lens for the D200 but don't let that title put you off it, it's a good lens for the money

Get a 50mm 1.8, used around £75, save up and get a decent zoom in the future when you've mastered the standard lens and the camera.
 
Go for the 50mm. I got one over the summer and I love it! Best 50 quid I ever spent (bought it in Hong Kong). I have the 1.8 not sure about 1.4 never used one but can't recommend the 1.8 50mm enough.

get the 1.8, and save the extra money towards a good zoom for the future. 50mm 1.8 is a great lens for little money. 1.4 is no better at apertures below 1.8, it just gives you a slightly wider aperture for low light shooting.
 
Nikon 18-70mm all day long. Best 'kit lens' Nikon have produced in my opinion. Nice solid feel too.

decided to go with the 18-70mm as it seems the best for my first lens (plus a wide angle will be usful for my art g.c.s.e) realised i had a bit more money than i thought i should defoe have a 50mm by december, then my qustain will be, 70-300mm or 18-200mm ? and is it worth saving up for a vr lens ?

The 18-70mm is a top lens, punches way above its weight in its class with good image quality. Personally, unless you are doing low light work? I'd just go with the 18-70 for the time being??? The 18-70 is very good at close-ups, use full zoom, get in 'close!!!', then zoom in 40% on the computer PP, you will be surprised . . . :thumbs:
 
I have a 50mm f1.4D
Approx 200 ukp new, can pick up on ebay and the like for 150ish

Fast, gives good blur and at f4 crisp with blurry background. On the d300 I have its 1.5x 50 so you don't have to be close and I'm crap at portraits, however this lens helps loads to getting decent pictures!

Link to the flickr pages in the signature - there is a set for 50mm on there, go have a browse.


Also browse through the flickr site (search at top) for the other lens you are interested in. See what sort of pictures can come out of it..?

If you stretch a bit on your budget you might consider a 30mm sigma f1.4, wider view...

I would go Nikon two ring 80-200 AF-D rather than either for your next one if your budget allows (£350-400) ;) I've got the AF-S which is a bit more £ and not so easy to find but both lenses are excellent... especially if you go FX in the future

18-70 AF-S is one of Nikon's amazing bit of glass; and for the price, it's just fantastic. Well done on choosing this one.

50 f/1.4; there are two versions, the older one, an AF-D, and the newer one, an AF-S. Both are very good, but I like the colours from the newer (AF-S) more.

As for the 70-300, there are a few versions of these; the older G models are very cheap to get, but the results can be disappointing. It's slow to focus, and sharpness is questioned by many. I love mine, due to its' lightweight and used it only as a manual focus. The new AF-S VR version is a different league. It's very sharp, and is another one of these amazing lenses that Nikon produces. For the price, it's pulling a lot of punch, and with outstanding results. Though not really cheap.

There is the 55-200 AF-S VR, not the non-VR version, this you've got to add to the list of Nikon amazing glass. Pretty sharp, relatively cheap, and not bad auto-focusing speed. Very impressed, I am with this.

What do I consider to be Nikon amazing lenses; those that are pretty sharp, relatively lightweight and cheap to buy. These are not as fast as the f/2.8 range of glass but image quality is amazing for what you can pay for them.
 
You wont go wrong if you get the Nikon 70-300mm vr Jack. An excellent lens again within a decent budget.
I owned one until I moved to better glass. I was very happy with it. :thumbs:
I would buy a decent secondhand one if I was in your position. In time you will only move it on as you become more demanding and want 2.8 glass.
It will happen. :D

I have an 18-70mm Nikkor lens if your interested. I never ever use it and am in the process of upgrading, it's been in its pouch in my camera case since I bought my first kit. PM me if interested in having it.
 
Take a look at the Sigma APO 70-300mm amazing optic for very little money.
They can be purchased at bargain prices new and s/h NO VR on it but the macro facility is superb 1/2 life size on FX and greater on DX with a excellent working distance.
It would compliment your 18-70mm very well :)
