Hi folks, I need some advice on a lens please. I have just bought a nikon D200 with a sigma 17-35 lens but i want to get something longer. I am thinking about the nikon 70-300 vr. Has anyone got any experience with this lens. Or is there something better my budget is about £400-£500.

Thanks kev.

Sorry folks i should have said i am new to photography so any advice would be great.

It really depends on whether you want outright performance or versatility.

I was missing something in the same range myself until recently so had been looking at a similar question myself.

I just bought a AF 80-200 f2.8 (not the push pull version!) for £500. This would be far better for IQ (image quality) than the 70-300 and being a fixed aperture of f2.8 would be better in low light and shooting moving objects. It would also work well with a TC at a later date should you wish to zoom further. The 70-300 is NOT a bad lens but I would suggest that the 80-200 is better, it is a pro lens verses a good amateur lens. I am sure you will find one. I am, for example, upgrading mine (not till the end of the year) to get a 70-200 but there must be lots of other people in the same position.

the 70-300 is a superb lens and within your budget better in good light but the vr is a treat on this

i am useing a d200 with 70-200 2,8 at the moment but obviousley out of budget for you

I just got the 70-300 and am well chuffed with it. Ok it may not be the fastest lens going but for the money and the focal length not to mention VR I think you will be hard pushed to beat it.

ps- You could get it without VR for a lot less *** personaly I think that it one of the best things about this lens!

If we're talking zooms then my money (in this budget) would be on a single-ring 80-200 AFD.

You're only missing out on 0.5x zoom but the quality of the images means you'll gain more than that from cropping.

I have the 70-200 (approx £1k so over budget). As people have said the older 80-200 is available for around £500-£600 and in all honesty is not far off the 70-200 having read many reviews. I had the 70-300, a decent lens and I do sometimes miss the extra 100mm. If you need the reach go for that, and you can get one SH for £300. If you want top notch quality and the 2.8 for for the 80-200.

agree the 80-200mm - still a current Nikon lens - is a great buy. If you can't afford it WAIT - SAVE and buy good glass - cheaper lenses produce cheaper results - the people who are happy with them have probably never used really good glass - it makes a HUGE difference to your work.

I've got a Nikon 70-300VR and am very happy with it - once you get past the dimensions - it's a pretty large and heavy lens (not pro size obviously, but a hefty beast)

Thanks everyone for the advice. I think i will go for the 70-300 vr, As i am a pure beginner with a dslr i will get some experience first and then maybe get something a bit better

Thanks again Kev

I have the Nikon 70-300Vr lens, its quite light compared to say the Sigma 120-400mm lens.
I find it a very versatile lens and should cover most of your needs. I do occasionally add the Sigma 1.4 tele converter to it. You won't find it anywhere saying this will fit this lens but it does, the rear inner moving barrel doesn't go back far enough to hit the converter. However depending on the aperture setting sometimes you have to go over to manual focusing

Thanks for that Bazza. I think i will get a tc for it in the future.

Cheers Kev.

i bought one i have since bought a 70-200 f2.8 vr

but i am not selling the 70-300 its too good and lighter

I am relatively new to this world and I have tried to get reasonable equipment that is within my budget and, importantly, not so far advanced that it is 'wasted' on me. I've got a Nikon 70-300VR which I bought off TP and it does the job for me - any poor photos with it are my fault not the lens. Good value for money s/hand

Couldn't agree more - these routinely go for about £350 second hand so you shouldn't have any problems picking one up. I've got one that I bought second hand and it's gorgeous!

Cor, I was gonna buy one first hand but I think I will strongly reconsider now!

Mscotts i want have the money for another week or so but i will keep an eye on your sale
thanks Kev

Thanks everyone for your feedback.
