Which Nikon Flash?

Hi there,

Not that much money floating about at the moment, usually take outdoor/landscape photos and never used an external flash.

Can anyone reccomend a flash to go with my Nikon D80. Been looking at the SB600 which is the obvious choice for the body, but does anyone have any reccomendations for an older model/different manufacturer, considering it will be uised infrequently....the inbuild flash cannot get itself over my 18-200vr so is pretty much obselete.

I've a wedding to do in July (a family friend) so need to get practising.
 
I'd recommend the SB600 cause i've got one, but i wouldn't discount the SB400 or older S/H nikon flashes:)
 
What about the SB 28DX or the SB80DX not quite as good as the 600 but nearly on par but as for prices the 80 is nearly the same as the 600 s/h
 
SB-600 is a good place to start, forget the 400 or the older stuff unless you're happy working in manual mode

I use the SB600's with my D80/S5 ........ really versatile flash ... love it especially in commander mode ..! :)
 
I'd suggest the SB-600 as the best bang for buck.
 
Yep, I'd say SB600 as well. SB400 is just not powerful enough and the SB600 doesn't cost that much more. I bought mine off eBay (brand new/sealed) for £110... Can't beat that!
 
yeah SB-600 gets my vote, easiest i have found to use and has the better results
 
SB600 - £125 from Kerso and a quality piece of kit. Plus, you can build it into a wireless system with other 600s in the future.

Other than that, agree about the SB80s - apparently very, very good.

I have an SB 80DX that I bought used as a spare. It'll do everything the SB800 will do, with the exception of ITTL, but it'll still do TTL. Very powerful, and has all the other features of the 800.

Very nice flash, and I think I paid £80 for it from MXV.
 
SB-600 is a great flash. I now have two...
 
Dougdarter, Cherryrig seems have a lot of good things to say about the SB80 DX - wasn't it the precursor to the SB800 as Nikon's old top-end flash? On paper these certainly seem to have evrything you need. Plus, like you say, you can get them for a bagain these days.

You are quite correct. Until the SB800 was introduced, the 80DX was the top dog. Still competes in every way IMO, less the ITTL. It's a superb unit, big and heavy, but very competent.
 
The SB600 will do everything you want unless you will be using every day, it should be fine for a wedding (i've used one) and if your using D80 and up you can use off camera, Nikon have a great wireless system, i will certainly buy another one when i have some spare dosh, some great prices on them at the moment :thumbs:
