I understand from what i have read with the latest versions one is for DX and one primarily for FX, i will be using it on DX but if the FX version is any better i will buy that, so any thoughts please.
 
It is more a question on the lens being a good copy or not I would have thought, apart from which camera it is going on. I personally stick with the correct one for the camera be it Full Frame or crop sensor. Then again if you have a crop DX camera are you intending to go to FF soon? in that case I would go for the FF lens. Pity you didn't say which camera version you have FX or DX

I have a NIKON AF-S NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G VR ED, never had issues

Thanks, i didn't say which camera as i don't have a Nikon body at the moment, i would expect it will be DX but if the consensus was the FX version was better/sharper or something i would go with that.
I can see the body being 7200/7500/D500, depending on the secondhand body market at the time.

I had the 70-300 lens both the VR and non VR versions on my Nikon D300 DX camera. I have to say compared to my now AFS 70-200 f2.8 G lens on the D810 they were soft, looking back on it now, but I didn't think so at the time.
If you are considering those cameras you are getting near or in the D810 used price bracket.

Now I havn't owned the D500 or the others so can't comment on them , but as I said To Damo in another thread the D810 takes some beating once mastered. The cropping ability without loss of picture quality still amazes me.

same position same lens. I don't think this would be possible with the cameras you mentioned.
NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G is the problem. You can never really achieve as good as an f2.8 across the lens mm range

I have had the 7200 and 500 but as my main gear is m4/3 i may not push to a 500, not handled an 800 version but i do need to keep the weight down and i understand it may need steadier hands than i have and i cant any longer carry a tripod around.
 
I have the dx af-p version and use it on my d500 for drag racing and it’s perfectly fine. I’m sure there are better lenses out there but for sub-£200 it’s a bargain
 
Mike it is only you who know what is suitable for you ,same is what I prefer to use now. All one can comment on is the equipment and how one finds it when being used. Of course cost is a huge factor as well, but as I always say if your happy with what your pictures turn out like is great, if others like them a well hen it is a bonus

get the d500 you won't regret it i would not go for the d800 unless your a landscaper or doing models
it is an amazing camera also the af-p vr lens
but if your going ff in the future get the af-p fx version

yes the D810 is better than the D800
 
I've never had the DX versions of the 70-300mm Nikon lenses as I wanted the best quality without going to f2.8 lenses with a shorter focal, larger heavier lens and more expense. I have never had the intention to go full frame. I was very happy with the AF-S 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 G IF-ED VR Lens for many years with the D200, D300 and D300S. I was never quite happy using that lens wide open. However, when I got the D500 that lens seemed a lot better wide open. So maybe the cameras needed their AF micro adjusted. :rolleyes: It was like having a new lens though. :)

Last year Nikon dropped the price of their new AF-P 70-300mm f4.5-5.6E ED VR Lens down to about £520, and also had a £90 cashback offer, as I was in a position to take advantage of it, I did. It is a better lens, but not by a huge amount, but a good overall upgrade. But after about 10 years with the previous lens it was time for an update due to wear and tear. :) Things had got a bit 'loose'. ;)

If you could afford it, I would get the FX version. It is a lot more though. :thinking:

 
I had a D7200 and used the E ED VR with it - great combination, super images, pretty quick focusing (apparently much quicker than earlier versions).
 
I recently bought a D500 and Amazon had the FX version on offer so I bought one of those. I wanted the FX version anyway as it's a stop faster and also I may start looking for a D850 sometime in the future.

Have to say I have not been disappointed, I did Also buy a Sigma 150-600mm Sport as 300mm isn't really long enough for airshows and most wildlife but I am really happy with it for most things.

These are really heavy crops but they stand up well I think.

Mikew knowing your situation and what you take mainly ,let me throw a spanner in the works have you thought about a 300mm F4 prime lightweight works well with t.c ‘s 1.4 ,1.7,2.0 and is a nice lightweight super sharp combo with incredible close focus ability and if funds allow you could go for a 300mm F4.PF version super light and short with VR

Thanks, at the moment i have the new gear headache :ROFLMAO:

Just about every combination has been through my head including the above, at the moment ime thinking i will keep the m4/3 for long range/ small bird situations so ime thinking a 70-300 would be a decent choice, if i decided on 300mm prime it would need to be the PF as i need VR.

Been through the same mike , trouble is when they say MFT has a 2x crop they forget that apsc has a 1.5 crop factor till you get out to the 150-600 lenses you don’t actually gain anything . It’s a hard one to settle down on , till I know what further heart work I need it’s a case of thumb twiddling I.e stick with what I have or go back to lighter gear

Hope all goes well with the heart side.

Been doing some research and i was happy with the D500 and Sigma 100-400, a bit short on reach but longer is too heavy for me, the D7500 and Sigma 100-400 is not a lot of difference to the G9 and Panny 100-400 in weight so its a contender, hoping to see one tomorrow.
I think, no i know its the G9 that brought me to this point, yes i can catch BIF with it but lose too many shots so going back on what i said earlier it may be DX for birding and m4/3 for everything else.

Got the EM1MK11 to play with for a few days, could have had that or the demo D500, decided it was no good trying the D500 first ;)

My LCS, i have bought from him for nearly 50 years and i can borrow most demo gear or secondhand to try,that's part of the reason i stay with him plus he matches Wex prices.

Looks pretty good to me. Just to make it more interesting a couple more from the D500 and FX 70-300mm (Terns in flight are a right pain as well)

The D500 is probably the best but with my mobility issues i am not sure i would get close enough to the subjects.
 
Great wildlife shots. What do people think of the Tamron 18-270 lens? I’ve inherited it as a beginner?
