I'm looking at getting myself a 50mm for my D300 and not sure which one to go for. I don't really want a stop gap and would rather pay the extra to the get the right lens.

From reading a little it looks like the sigma f1.4 is the one to go for as the AF-S Nikon is a little slow at focusing.

I think i just need a little more nudging towards the sigma :thumbs: but if I'm over looking any others then please let me know.
 
personally I'd go for the Sigma (I ordered one but when it didn't arrive the misses bought me a 70-200 instead!), though can understand why some people would be put off by the size of it and possible build/QC issues...
 
In real-world use I'm finding the AF-S anything but slow to focus - it's much quicker at micro-adjusting than the AF-D and hunts less. Shots from yesterday. both low-light indoor and late afternoon outdoor:

Some nice pictures Radiohead and thanks for uploading them. So price wise the Nikon is £270ish or the Sigma £340ish. Is it worth the extra £70 ?

I think what ever lens I go for I will enjoy each as it will be my first 50mm.
 
Very lovely pictures Radiohead, that's me convinced then :) Hopefully I can nab one soon.
 
I have the 'D' Version and love it! Focus is as quick as the 'S' version, or at least it seems to be after trying them both, and the wide open performance, while maybe not as good as the 'S' or the Sigma is certainly good enough.

If you can get the 'S' or the Sigma cheap enough go for it, but other than that the 'D' version has a hell of a lot to offer for the price.

As for a lens... don't discount the Nikon 50mm f1.8 AF-D... super sharp, but also super cheap (around £60-70 new) which will give you heaps left over for another lens!!! :-)

£60-£70? Could you please tell me where? I am currently looking for this lens and can't find it that cheap - best I have seen is 80+ :thumbsdown: - and every little helps!

Any particular reason for wanting an AF-S/HSM version? Personally, I would head over to Mifsuds and try the AF-D f/1.4 they have second hand. 1/2 the price of the motor-in-lens versions from either Nikon or Sigma.
