Now I have a new wide angle, I tested my Hitech ND10 filter out and it seems I have a problem.
Wouldn't mind a new filter, so which one should I buy?

The above gives a strong blue tint that I don't like and is a pain to correct in lightroom.

I was under the impression they all have a colour cast. It's very quick to correct though and shouldn't be a pain in the arse. Take a grey test card if you're really fussy or just use the grey eyedropper in levels on the stone wall. It's a 5 second job.

The regular Hitech 10 stopper has a blue cast the Hitech Firecrest range doesn't (or very little), but they are not cheap!!! (even the 16 stopper is very neutral)

Ouch. No they're not cheap are they? Would I have any problems using a screw-on filter than the other sort on the wide angle? I'll have to search the net I think

They are pretty slim, I've had no issues stacking a couple on a 14mm crop lens (21mmFF equivalent), and thats included an adapter ring to go from my lens thread to the thread of my filters. If your wideangle is 18mm crop as listed in your kit list, then you won't have a problem.

The wide angle is a Canon 10-18mm. The filter looks to be fantastic, but it appears that isn't great for low light photography?

What do you mean low light photography, any 10 stop filter will require the use of a tripod and extended exposure times, often minutes depending on initial ambient light. eg if ambient is 1/60sec then with a 10 stopper it will be 16 seconds,

220 seconds with Hitech Firecrest 16 stopper, very little post processing.

'Low light' as in evening/sunrise etc

Agree with post above by Mr Perspective, a 10 is probably too much at sunset.

To give an example, I shot a sunset a few nights ago using a 2 stop reverse grad and a Firecrest 7 stop. Correct exposure was about 45 seconds (although I just took a 30 second and bought it up in post).

Think my next purchase will be a 4 stop which hopefully will be about right for this type of shot (at least how I want it).

I have invested heavily in Firecrest ND Filters and have 3, 6, 10 and 16 giving me a variety of combinations, but often I find I'm using 13 stops 10+3 (for which there is a Firecrest, but one I don't have, but I've had no issues stacking, and even adding grads. Unfortunately in this game, you do need the right tools for the job!!!

But 3, 6 and 10 stoppers will suit most applications even going up to 19 stops!

THink I'll stick to the 10 stopper for now otherwise it'll be too expensive for me especially when I don't have a job.

Well, just placed an order for it from Amazon....should get it on Saturday. Thank you for the help in recommending me an ND filter :ty:

Maybe a bit late - but just spotted this thread - and left this post on another thread just now:

If you're looking for a filter that has a minimal colour cast - there's an American company - fairly recent startup called Breakthrough - I bought a ten stop and a polariser from them around 6 months ago. The 10 stop I haven't used as much as I would have liked - but where I have used it - very happy with the colour. The few times I went out to get a sunrise or sunset - there wasn't a cloud in the sky. Not what you need for a 10 stop shot (in my case). They're not cheap though. The 10 stop 82mm is currently USD$189.00:

I bought a polariser at the same time - and recently I noticed there was a scratch on it, not a big one, but still a scratch. I'm genuinely very careful with my kit, and couldn't for the life of me work out how it had gotten there. I was a bit disappointed that a filter at this price had scratched so easily - considering the minimal use it had had. I wrote them a message, and said how disappointed I was - (and I was) - but expecting them to say 'oh well be more careful next time' - but instead, they were apologetic, and offered to send me another one FOC (which is currently in transit). They don't mind that I can't send the other one back until mid-September on my next UK visit. I was actually wowed off my feet at their response - so not only do I recommend their filter - I also recommend their service (there were a few horror stories of service in their early days, but they seem to have gotten over that). So if within your budget - and you want as little of a colour cast as possible - I'd go for one of these. This is one of my images using it - just a sunrise through the window, the clouds were incredibly slow.

Thank you for your reply Chris. I noticed some comparisons between the Breakthrough, Hitech and Big Stopper filters and I went with the Hitech as it seems better than most.

Check the filters from Progrey USA. Been using them and very happy with the results I'm producing with their products :)

Thanks, but I placed an order on the Hitech Firecrest.

The firecrest has just arrived. Can't really test it out rright now because it's raining. Might go out on Monday. Will post results either in this thread or start a new one.
