Which ND filters?

I do a lot of landscape stuff but due to the dismal climate usually have grey skies which end up washed out so looking at ND grad filters.

Can someone recommend (ideally Cokin as i have holder already) a sensible set of 2-3 of them to get me started? Currently i only have P series 121S. Would i be better getting one with a far steeper gradient or even a pure hard ?

(currently had very poor results with the 121S mainly i suspect due to me not quite getting it in the correct place and so on)
 
You might want to look at the HiTech range of ND grad filters as well
 
HiTech - having said that if your grey skies are that dull and featureless, try to avoid sky in your shots.
 
I have a set of HiTechs, which can be picked for £30 for a set of 3 ND Grads and are well worth it.

Tempting but not really practical. Its just overcast about 95% of the time here to varying degrees and trying landscape type shots without sky isnt overly practical.

I know what you mean about the welsh weather..... desperate:shrug:

But grey skies are often not worth including unless they're really dramatic. ND grads can help but sow's ear / silk purse scenario me thinks.

Try getting into some woodland, try waterfalls. Some subjects suit grey weather, when the contrast isn't so high.:)

Agreed, I actually quite enjoy the low contrast.

Unless the sky is dramatic, or has some interesting colour, less is more.
 
Do the Hi tech filters fit in th cokin P holder? I'm just thinking if they do, as they're 1mm wider than the p style filters.

And how are they with colourcasts? The cokin colourcast is noticeable, as soon as you start combining Grad filters.
 
No, the HighTechs's have no colour cast, I've stacked them (0.9x + 0.3x for 4 stops).
