Which NAS - have some specific requirements

I'm after a NAS device, but it must meet the following requirements....

2 bays (at least)
Can take 3.0Tb drives
Can work via Gigabit or USB 3.0/2.0

I want to plug it into my home network, but the ability to unplug it from the network and plug it into my laptop via USB
 
HP Microserver N40L (currently going cheap)? Think you would need some add in cards for the USB3 and Gigabit connections though. Probably not the best choice if you want something that just works out of the box.

I am going round all the sites and it isn't looking good.

Looks like USB2/USB3 and some manual effort from me :(
 
get a router with usb media sharing connection and plug a usb hard drive into it. that will give you a network drive and you can unplug it if you want.

Don't know if any are usb3 though but you can certainly do gigabit to the router.
 
Hadn't thought of doing that, just found out my router doesn't support ntfs, only fat :(

The microserver could still be an option. run some software on it to mirror/sync whatever data you want on USB to a plug in USB drive. Just unplug the copy when you want to take it with you. Gives you a backup as well as what you need.
 
Hi Robert, I'm already running a Dell T110 server at home with virtual machines and my current procedure is.....

All my photos are in one of the guests running on the host.

Plug USB into host
remote into host, map shared drive from guest to the host
Run robocopy /MIR between the mapped drive and the USB drive.

It is doable, just not pick up and go doable.
