Which Monitor ?

I'm looking to upgrade my photo editing gear and although I can't afford a new computer just yet I was going to buy a new monitor. At the moment I'm using a Mac book pro 2.16ghz intel core duo 17inch machine with Aperture and photoshop cs3 and what I'm looking for is a very good quality monitor as what I'm finding is that the 17 inch screen on the MBP although is fine for video editing I don't find it good enough for professional photography.
So can anybody recommend a good professional quality monitor... but wait for it!! Here's the caveat... CHEAP professional quality monitor. I was thinking maybe Dell, formac, somebody like that rather than a Lacie or Eizo.

I took ages but eventually bought an HP LP2475W. 24" 1920*1200, wide colour gamut. My one is good but not perfect. The brightness is very slightly uneven from left to right, I think. Though apparently HP service these really seriously as they're classed as business, not consumer, so I might try to get it swapped. The colours out of the box are so intense that I bought a 'spyder 3' to profile it - now it's very nice in photoshop and firefox, and can show more of AdobeRGB than my previous monitor. Previously people's HDR images made my head explode... Hope this helps.

I recently bought a Dell 2209WA E-IPS screen. It's very good value for money, but there's no such thing as a free lunch. Calibrated it's OK, but it's not as good as Apples now discontinued 20 and 23" Cinema Display's. For instance the 20" Cinema Display runs at 1680 x 1050, the Dell displays this on a larger 22" display and at a larger pixel spacing, resulting in a display visibly not as sharp as Apple's. I couldn't afford a top of the range NEC or Eizo and although tempted, didn't want a used Apple with no warranty.
 
Another vote for the 2209WA

Note though, that it doesn't work in mirror mode with a MBP.
 
Hi I have just been speaking to Dell about the 2209Wa monitor and it turns out that it has the same resolution as my Mac book pro 17 inch screen so they recommended this one a DELL E248WFP 1920 x 1200 resolution does anybody have any experience of it ?
I really don't want to get it wrong.
 
I use the Dell UltraSharp 2709W and if the whole range is similar then you won't be disappointed.
 
I have a BenQ FP241w (24", 1920x1200) connected to my MacBook Pro (15.4" matte) and it is a very nice display- good reviews and uses a P-MVA panel. Although, I do need to invest in some kind of calibration device to optimise settings.

You want to avoid TN panels in a monitor, the best type are IPS for quality, and VA panels are a bit more affordable but still offer great quality.
 
Hi all
I have gone ahead and bought the Dell 2408 WFP monitor. I have not got it yet but hope I have done the right thing. I have a Huey pro calibrator so hopefully that will sort out any colour issues, but I'd love to hear if you guys have any other tips. Also as for connecting it to my Laptop do you think I should run a dual screen or just a single one and should I go straight DVI to DVI or do you think DVI to HDMI would give me best quality. All thoughts appreciated

The Dell 2408 is a PVA panel (IIRC) so it's a good (and popular) choice.

I have my screen connected straight DVI-DVI (although DVI-HDMI would provide the same quality- its a digital connection). It is set to extend my MacBook Pro's desktop, so I can just drag stuff across to the other screen. I have set my 24" as primary monitor (drag title bar thing in display prefs) and use my MBP on a Griffin Elevator stand (with external keyboard & mouse) to raise it up level with the monitor and make a more easy viewing position.
