Which monitor should I go for?

Hi All,

I am looking at upgrading from my old 17" display to something a bit newer and bigger and better. :D

Does anybody have any good advice for which monitors to buy which have good colour accuracy (and the best places to get them).

I'd be interested in either the search results or anyone's comments as I am considering an upgrade too?

I have an HP w2207h which is a great monitor except the viewing angle is attrocious, I think the difference between viewing the monitor with eye line in the centre and 6" above of below is about a + or -1 Exposure.I am now unsure whether I'm actually adjusting my photo's in LR accurately or not.

The problem is also that a monitor calibration always works with the "spyder" in the middle of the screen not moving position?
 
If you have the room, then stick to a good old CRT monitor. Well for me colours are spot on viewed from most angles, I only use my LCD screen as the second desktop to hold all of the Photoshop tools.
 
From what I have found so far, apparently alot of people are saying the dell 2209WA is the one to go for. Just gotta find a place that does them cheap now. Dell are selling them at £316 :eek: which is a little out of my budget. :'(

oh well ... off to google
 
budget is about £150 ish ... although might be able to stretch to £200

Depending on your PC and its graphics card, I would go for a 24" LCD with 1920x1200 or 1920x1080 resolution. Colour accuracy can vary between models within a company so I would do some research on the colour accuracy of your chosen model.

I've had good experience with LG and Dell monitors.

Ah, I've got a Dell 2408 ultrasharp, fantastic monitor, you may find one on ebay in your price range.

Or you could try one of these Dell 2310

We bought these at work recently and they are great for the price.
 
Yeah no problem, although Ive had the same 19" monitor I got with my PC when I bought it 4 years ago which is shocking so will no doubt seem perfect in comparison!

If you have a way to buy through Dell business they had/have good discounts on certain products from time to time! Bare in mind you'll need to add VAT though.
 
I have had 2 Samsung monitors since I switched to flat screen and currently have 2 23" ones on my desktop. I find them great and are I didnt have to calibrate them much do get them spot on with my prints, I got mine for £169 each. Samsung monitors also look pretty good style wise and their panels have a 3 year warrantee which covers dead/hot pixels which is handy.

Wow...just set the monitor up!

Yet to calibrate, that can wait until tomorrow.

Viewing angle is amazing compared to my bog standard "kit" monitor. In terms of colour temp it is very consistent, but does darken as your move of 0 degrees not to such an extent that it will vary while your sitting in your usual position.

Very pleased and looking forward to getting it calibrated and getting used to using the expanse of space!

Which 2410 did you go for. I have 2x U2410 and they are really great :) Didn't need much calibration from the sRGB presets at all.

I only have one slight issue and that is occasionally, when coming out of standby, they don't seem to sync 100% and I get a missync on bands across the screen (weird to describe). Turning the monitor off then on again fixes it. Just not quite 100% perfect.

Yes, expensive, but I spend all day and some of the evening working in front of them so (oh, and a desktop 3840x1200 is about "right" for screen real estate :D)....
 
If you have a grand or so spare then the Dell 30" is the dogs dangly bits of monitors, I saved for over a year and got one and all I can say is "wow" its the most amazing piece of kit Ive ever purchased

I just ordered one from Overclockers UK - should be here today. There are not that many people who sell the u2410 in the UK and so they all seem to be around the same price £460 ish.Pcbuyit are a bit cheaper but currently out of stock. There is one supplier on amazon selling for £430 but as far as I can see they have never sold anything on Amazon before and so have no feedback or reviews. The one place you should not buy from is Dell - around £580 for some reason.
 
Benq do some stunning monitors. Aria have one on special today.
 
£345 for a refurbished U2410 on ebay is definitely a good deal then .... but I am still trying to find out what people think about the difference in price between the £160 for the 2209WA and the £345 for the U2410.

Is the extra money worth it?

Trouble is Matt they are £586 according to Dell UK today - I would not pay £120 more for buying straight from Dell especially seeing the guarantee is exactly the same where ever you buy from. They also state that it usually ships withing three weeks !!!!!

You need to find out the rev level of the U2410 if buying second hand as there were some issues with earlier screens - the latest rev is 01 I believe.

Im not disputing that...just stating they are available periodically at £460 if you would prefer to deal with Dell directly.

Mine took 9 days to deliver. Not the fastest but I was in no hurry.

Just checked with the ebay seller. Apparently they do have a load that are A01, so all I have to do is get the extra dosh together, or go for the 2209WA.

aarrrgggghhhh .... I need to get better at making decisions :thinking: :bang: :bonk: :cuckoo:

I'm starting to think that I am just too obsessed with upgrading all the time and should stick with what I have!

Bought off eBay for £365 each back in April. Brand new UK stock, with Dell direct 3years warranty (which I used so I know works).

The same shop is now charging a lot more for them!

It's relatively easy to update the monitor to A01 spec (I've done it myself).
