Hi All,

I have been having a look online at some DSLR mags to subscibe to and there are a few, which one do you get and would recommend?

Thanks

Depends what type of photography you like.

I personally like Outdoor photography because I like landscapes and wildlife..

Are you into portraits for eg or do you like more generic stuff?

Hi,

I do mostly Portrait/candid and wildlife, but am up for anything really. I think the more I learn across the board can only improve my portraits and wildlife shots.

What a mag with tips and tricks really, with equipment reviews etc.

Thanks

Greg,

I've found Practical Photography good for the stuff you mention..

A word of advice though regarding subscriptions. They cover the same subjects etc. within 6 months, so the second half of your subscription will mainly be repeats of previous mags.

I'd definately suggest a trip to WH Smith on Gentleman's Walk and look through all the mags (they stock pretty much every mag there is). Check the content and see what appeals to you the most..

I usually only buy a particular mag if I learn something from articles inside it, so am not drawn to a particular mag...

Hope that helps :)

i get practical photography and digital photo. Practical photography has more camera setup sort of stuff whereas digital photo has more on photoshop. Both contain a lot a advertisement :(

Think they are giving away an Arctic Butterfly sensor cleaner now

Probably still a good deal (if you want one) as they are about forty quid in the shops

Thanks for the replies everyone, think I'll do as suggested and go to the shop and have a look.

cheers

I think the only reason to subscribe is to get the free gift lol. Otherwise just buy the one you like the look of the most

I subscribed to EOS Magazine and HATE it. Writing is dry/glib, and looks like a low-budget trade magazine.

Amateur Photographer is my favourite - good mix of news, practical features and reviews.

Digital Photo is great if you're into Photoshopping.

PhotoPlus (Canon) is good for beginners (only). Too many pictures of bald staff, mind!

Digital Photographer is printed on lovely paper, but much of the advice is cobbled together from interviews with amateurs (might as well read the Net). Some odd content too, like studio reviews.

Digital Camera is a good all-rounder for amateurs...

I could go on!

I buy LOADS of these magazines which is crazy because, as someone said above, they recycle the same features/themes every few months (macro! low-level light! black & white! portraits! etc) and pretty much all of the content is available online.

Oh, and I have a stack of unwatched discs. D'oh!

Digital SLR User is a good all round Mag it also runs compilations for clubs
And fronm the same publishers Photo Pro is a good one as well

Hi Chaz

Is this a subscription only mag or can it be picked up / browsed at in a shop - I've not seen this and fancy having a new Mag

You can buy it but not a lot of shops have it I find it in Smiths ask they can get it in for you if not on shelf

Got the last three copies (incl Feb) of DSLR user if you want a browse for the price of postage
Would usually just send them, but a bit weighty and very skint after christmas

I'll have a peek in one tomorrow if I can find one, not a problem ordering a subscription, but wanting to have a flick through one first,

Cheers

Yes please, let me know how much and I'll paypal gift it to you.

Thanks

Made a slight error:bonk: the ones I have are Digital SLR Photography, can see how I made the mistake, so many similarly titled mags

I have just cancelled my subsription to Practical Photography - 3 reasons. 1. Same stuff over and over again, so waste of money 2. Even as a subscriber, I seem to receive my copy few days after it's on sale on the shop shelves and 3. Free gifts given with magazine in shops that you don't get as a subscriber (they do it to attract new readers, but I feel pretty cheated that as a subsriber, I'm getting a raw deal)

One I've recently started enjoying Photography Monthly. Waiting until they do a decent subscription offer and I will subscribe.

Digital Camera Mag subscribed for over 2 years now and love it. Free manfrotto monopod with new subscriptions so worth a look at. It works for me.

Nice offer, I have some mags on the way at the moment, but once I have read my way through them may be we can sort out a Norwich mag swap??

Cheers

I have a pile of recent back issues to give away if any norwich people want them, otherwise mr bin gets fed.

Photography Monthly is a good mag that seems to keep refreshing itself. It has a good spread of basic and more technical guides for both Camera and PP.
Would I subscribe to it, probably not; I find it preferable to browse the shelves of WHS when short of reading material or traveling and pick up whichever mag has something interesting I want to read.

I do however receive f2 by subscription and regularly buy Photo Pro.

Personally in the past I have found that any mag (not just Phot) I have had on subscription end up being skimmed when they arrive and never read properly, then when I am traveling I forget to take the latest with me so end up buying from WHS anyway.

Amateur Photographer. In my view streets ahead of most of them. Well written and impartial.

It is generally cheaper to purchase by subscription, but there can be downsides:-

Occasionally much of the content will not be something that interest you.
Over Xmas and NY my deliveries were much later than the mags appearing in shops (they are supposed to be delivered before appearing in shops).

I have had one issue of Photography Mag fail to be delivered, but they extended my sub by one month to compensate.

I have had one issue of AP fail to appear and my email of complaint has been ignored.

I doubt if I'll renew any subs.

Which Manfrotto tripod is it? Might be worth it this one!

Manfrotto 679B Mono pod great piece of kit.

According to the DCMAG website...Its a Lowepro Altus 140 bag ??

I am a self confessed Magazine Junkie.:cuckoo:

I cannot resist the alluring temptation of their shiny front covers and content packed pages.

It causes no end of grief from her in doors, as the pile of magazines grows around the house.:naughty:

Needless to say I have several subscriptions.

The camera magazines I subscribe to are-

Digital camera- Good articles, some reviews and a couple of tutorials-easy read for the novice- intermediate user.

Practical Photographer- Packed full of tutorials & guides on the practical application of photography-Readers photos and also Web site reviews.- This magazine is more inspirational and educational.

The ones I may buy when tempted-

Digital photographer- Which is Big & Glossy has some big articles along with big glossy pictures-I tend to buy this for some inspiration and the allure of the the big pictures!

Digital Photo- this is purely photo shop technique I will buy this if it has an article i want to read and understand.sister magazine of Practical.

I was only allowed ONE  photography magazine a month it would be,

Practical photography
- it is full of good ideas and techniques and is well worth a read.

I tend to buy a magazine from a shop for 6 months before I subscribe.

However since borders shut down I am having magazine withdrawal:shake::shake::cuckoo:......I need to venture into more than one shop for my fix.........:bonk::bang::eek:

Good luck with your hunt,

cheers

Digital Camera mag seem to change month by month. I have 2 years worth and every other month they change things around. On month Mono pod then Lowerpro and sometimes its lens filters. I believe when you ring them to subscribe you can request the "gift" you receive.

I also am a magazine-a-holic.

I had a subscription to DigitalPhoto which I have just cancelled, as like other posters have mentioned, it seems as though the same stuff just gets repeated, even down to having the same files on the free cd 12 months later.

I have found a better way than getting a subscription though... I live out of town, so getting mags is a pain, but the Post Office will order me in anything I like for nothing! Just need to pay for the mag on a monthly basis and I get the cover goodies if there are any...

Currently, the PO reserves:
Black+White Photography. I love this magazine and since picking up all the issues from #1 on Freecycle, have continued to add to it. I have yet to find a topic repeated, and it has a good mix of other photographers' work, competitions, techniques and other stuff. It can be a bit up its own bum at times though.
Photoshop Creative. I find it more informative than DigitalPhoto, and have yet to go through it's "cycle" of regurgitation. I like playing with digital art as well as photography, even though I'm not very good at it.

Also, when I'm in town, I'll pick up the latest Digital Photographer as a good all-rounder magazine. Professional Photographer and Photo Pro are usually flicked through, then put down again, although I may occasionally buy them. If I have a fiver to hand I'll usually pick something up, but only B&W Photography and Photoshop Creative escape the paper recycle bin.

Ian.

did anyone see - within the last few days - a post or a link to a mag which was offering..

5 issues for £5 - then I forget - maybe hinged on taking a 17month sub ?

Make sure it isn't Photography Monthly
Used to enjoy it, but recently had a revamp and its now a big stinking pile of poo

So awful that they have taken to removing any criticism on their own webste and censoring every post.
The feedback section was full of complaints from subscribers and the negative comments mysteriously dissappeared overnight
The new editor basically said tough luck. that's what we are doing so like it or lump it, even though much of the feedback was constructive

Feel sorry for anyone who got a sub and now has to endure that publication for the next however many months

Google this "site:forum.photographymonthly.com photography monthly censor" and look at the cached to read all the removed posts, very sad way to behave

i have a sub with Digital SLR Photography, cost me about 35quid i think and that came with a cokin filter set as a free gift. I think they are offering a tripod or something similar at the moment.

I think it covers all the areas...macro, portraits, landscape, sport and so on. Has great in depth reviews on all products and price ranges too!
